Got it.
I was wrong, that nut isn't bolted to the frame, so just putting a 12 open end behind it I was able to break it loose. It was funny that all other 5 just unscrewed like the nut was welded to the frame.
Anywho..so yea, got it dropped, sort of.
Got the three gas lines labelled and off.
Now back to that fill tube and that whatever that tube is running with it.

Do you guys just wiggle all that as a unit out? Cause my wiggler ain't happen there. I can try holding my mouth different I guess, but I can't seem to get those stiff tubes (like ya'll said) to cooperate to get it down.
If you take them off first, what do you use? It's a phillips slot, but it's a rusted, Titanic looking phillips slot and when I try just a little, they don't budge.
PB? (I got some today, thanks Gmack)
what kinda tool you use to reaaaacccch back there and get that fill tube clamp off?

I would pull the filler loose at the bed and snake it out with the tank..You may have to loosen the bed bolts (4) to make it a little easier.

Once you have the tank on the ground, clean the outside real good, then take the sending unit and pickup out. That will give you access to the inside... then clean, clean & clean again.. Blow all the lines out a few times and get a new pick up sock (screen).

Does your fuel gauge work?

Gotcha. I wasn't sure if I was missing something or not. It's just all weird about getting it TO it to get it out. Springs, frame, and I forget what else

Yea, fuel gauge works great..or did. LOL.
I tell you, I read somewhere, or maybe someone advised here..but knowing what i know now, it might be a WHOLE lot easier to just take that bed off. I may end up doing just that before I do anything else. We want to replace those flexible fuel lines. And, have to work on the brakes anyways back there. One tail light wiring. I'm sure they'll be some reason to get under the back more.
Ok..so, just take four bed bolts out and lift the bed off?
OMG I'm going to have pieces of Dixie from one side of that barn to the other.

My 83 had 8 bolts holding the bed on. Also unscrew the filler neck from the bed. Open the lid to fill up the tank and there is 3 phillips head screws hold it on. Be sure to take the cap off too before taking the bed off lol.

Yup 8 bolts (4 each) side. Any how the bed is not hard to take off, if that is what you want to do.. On other trucks that I had to drop the tank, I just loosened up the passengers side of the bed and lifted it enough to get the filler tubes out.

As far as parts all over the barn goes........BEEN THERE DONE THAT and doing it again.. This time with a HEEP.. But it is all fun and a learning experience.. So jump in and enjoy it...

Before I go yanking on bolts I don't need to, is this a bed bolt? Bed bolts have two nuts on it? I know that sounds stupid to you guys, but there's more bolts down there than I had thought. Looks like some put the bed on a frame and that frame connects to the truck frame.

What a stuck tank looks like:

My old Chiltons was the latest victim in my dogs late night destruction. He went to the barn, got it out and ripped it apart. Man, I'm so mad.
He's back in a kennel today. He's fine during the day but at night he's like some rock star just raising 8 shades of he## and ripping up whatever he can find. He also ate a plastic table on last nights rampage.
I was gonna use it get this bed off, locate the right bed bolts.
Yes, I know it's rusty, it's 32 years old.

What has you stuck? Will a BFH help? LOL

Mine fell out once all the bolts were out and hoses disconnected. You might have to put the tank back up in correct position and try dropping the inward front end first to clear. As far as tank bolts, I did find one on the back inward side that has a nut not spot welded to frame bracket. Fixed it with a new nut and a spot weld

FINALLY>>>>dad gummed tank out.
Don't ask me how, but I twisted, yanked and finally got it out without taking the bed off.

So...what's this? I keep reading about a sock or something, and I ain't seen no sock except the ones on my feet.

Congrats, that looks like my tank when it was pulled. The "sock" or screen needs to be replaced and the pickup tube cleaned inside and out.

Did you sender unit work before you started work on the tank? If not, you can look here for some tips https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f114...el+tank+sender

Yea, my fuel gauge worked fine...probably won't now though. One of those wires on that clip broke when I was getting it out. I'll have to research how that's fixed.
Is this screen you're talking about the basket looking thing on the end of the pickup tube? replace that? The one in the second pic?

I have had 7 old Toyota trucks and a car and 4 or 5 other Toyotas and don't recall ever seeing anything like that.....The "sock" is a fabric tube that is closed on one end, the other end fits in the pickup tube. Think pre-filter.

Well, aren't I the lucky one. LOL
Thanks gmack.
I posted a ? about it in Pre 84 to see if anyone else has seen one.
So, what's the best way to clean this and the float up?

I got THIS
Loctite Rust dissolver to clean inside the tank with.
I was wondering if letting this fuel intake and float soak in that Loctite rust dissolver.
Reckon it would hurt em to let those parts soak in that diluted awhile??

EPA shut down radiator shops cleaning those, it looks like.
I might have found one that will. Dropping it off tomorrow. 60 bucks to clean.
I'm going to clean up that basket thing on the end of the intake tube, it's in good shape just dirty.
30 bucks at Toyota.
Gotta repair that clip to the sending unit. May have to just take it off and take to an electric place and see can they repair it and I'll splice it back to those two lines.

Turning now back to the brakes while all the tank stuff gets cleaned. can't figure out where the brake fluid is going when we're pumping it to bleed the air.. Can't see any underneath the truck on the ground.

I know I am spending your money, but if it were me, I would start at the master cylinder and replace everything with seals or rubber (lines, calipers and wheel cylinders).... Cheep when you consider the option..
