So, got a sweet deal on this truck this weekend. It used to belong to a friend of mine who got it from his dad. He converted it to the flatbed as his senior project and then stuck it into a garage and went into the Army Reserves.
He wanted to just give it to me since he had no use for it.. so I gave him $100. So far all I've done is stuff some 33" Super Swampers under it and rebuild the carb which had rust in the float bowl. Next I'll pull the tank and see if its usable.

My unofficial plan for the immediate future is for a 4" lift from Trail Gear, swapping cab and bed and probably an Aussie locker in at least the rear.
Totally open for opinions and fellow brainstormers.

Picked up a 79 standard cab and shortbox for $150 today... Its rough but the core is cancer free so after some fender work it should be fairly straight.




Tomorrow i'll get started pulling the old body. I'm also going to look into getting a trail gear setup on while the bodies off.

 

just a note on the spare head. you can tell if it's a 20r by the shape of the intake ports. Round ports on the 20r, square on the 22r. Good luck on the project.

 

What if they're roundish square ports?


Played around with my new MIG for a few hours tonight, then pulled the flatbed off and started pulling the tank to clean it.

 

nice find man i would go through it with a fine tooth comb and clean/paint the frame. i've got truck/find envy. it's pretty cool to start with a toyota at only 100 bucks and the sky's the limit. good luck scribed....

Got the body off today.... Took a bit longer than I expected but i figure a solid 6 hours isn't bad for my first toyota.
Had a few stuck cosmetic's that needed some persuasion...


Then I dropped it down as low as possible since I had to use man power to transport it.



Luckily I got all the connections the first try and it slipped right off.



Now I have to decide what all I want to do while everything is so easily accessible.

 

Subscribing, this looks interesting. I too am feeling the truck envy, finding a gen 1 4x4 is damn near impossible in Cali, let alone for 100$.

 

alright, been about 3 weeks but I've been slammed at work so I've just been collecting parts. Should be able to get some more progress tomorrow.
Picked up a power steering setup for $60, new windshield for $50, an aussie locker for the rear, and some trail gear goodies...


Also got some 3/4 ton "light duty" chevy 63" springs and some rear springs (for up front) off a wheeler on craigslist that had a 4 link setup on the rear running a 22re, so I should hopefully be able to pop the rear springs on my front without too much fine tuning/swapping leafs.
I'm going to order a 4-stud hysteer setup from trail-gear this weekend. I contemplated a 6stud setup but after talking to some buddies I've decided that I'll just weld some plating on and tap 2 more studs per side and call it good... I'm just building a trail and hunting rig, afterall. No need for jumping or ramming stumps. Its just not worth the $250-$300 extra for the lifetime warranty in -my situation-.
Also looking for some 35x12.5 BFG MT's or similar to run as daily rubbers.

 

Picked up a couple more goodies after work yesterday and this morning.
Hopefully I'll get some time tomorrow to take the original suspension off and start laying up the new spring hangars.

Made some progress tonight.. Took more effort than I'd like.


I had to cut both the front spring hangar and the shackles off just to get the stock springs off, they were so gummy.



then to get the shackles out of the hangar I had to cut the end off and pull them from the inside and pound them the rest of the way with a splitting maul and a socket extension

Well, spent the weekend looking for a decent toyota for a friend of mine who was looking for a first car. Unfortunately he had no patience and just wanted to have something before the weekend was over so he ended up jumping on this 93 Ext cab for $1400...


It wasn't a bad deal, mostly stock with some blocks in the rear and it looks like cranked torsions up front. Its still got the stock 3.0 V6.

Anyway, got some more goodies today. 4-stud TG crossover kit, IFS steering box mounting kit, rear shock tabs, u-bolt flip, bushings for rear shackle hangar, bump stops, 8 magnum studs, and TG's $15 light for a backup light.


I should have all my major purchases done now.... Just fun time now.
Plan to put the rear end together this weekend. keep me accountable, guys


I would love to but I'm not sure I have the time. I really want to get it goin so i can hit the trails. But yeah, I already spot treated some bad spots so I'll probably leave the frame at least for the time being. I do plan on using POR-15 on firewalls and such.

 

Nice progress.... I'm can't wait to see it done ... will look awesome with those round 79 headlights ..... That truck your friend bought looks decent for 1400 looks like that front fender needs some work ...
