mackman83's 1983 pickup 250$ budget Build up Thread

Ok so i have been on Yotatech for a while now looking up stuff to help me out with my build and recently i have gotten into looking at other peoples build up threads and decided it was time to make my own. so here we go. My neighbor called and said he had an 83 longbed he wanted to sell and i went to look at it and it was just a disaster. He bought the truck new in 83 and used it up untill 2008 when it finally just started giving him too many probs. I asked him what was bad about the truck and he said that it needed a starter and wouldnt idle and had some rust in the cab. He threw in a boatload of parts (5spd trans with t-case, extra solid front axle, hood, tailgate 4 decent steel wheels, passenger fender, aluminum rollbar thing, rebuilt carb, and a camper shell to to top it all off) and i asked him how much he wanted and he said 250$ cash to get it outta my yard. I hopped right on that and figured that even if i didnt do anything to it i could just sell the parts, so i got it home and it sat for a few weeks and i got a buddy to come help and we got it runnin (well kinda) and it wouldnt idle so we figured it was the carb so i put on the other carb and it still didnt run right. so i figured what the heck ill just lift it and worry bout that later. so we went ahead and cut the bolts holdin the bed down and took the bed off. this is what it looked like when we got it home and were ready to take the bed off. ( ill try and upload the pics from my fone)

Ok so after taking the bed off i went ahead and put a shackle only lift (i know crappy) and changed the oil, i had some extended shackles from an 85 yota and used them for the front and had a machine shop make me up some custom rear shackles out of 1/4 steel plates (6in long 2.5 in wide and 1/4 in thick.) and removed some rear leaves ( not too many the P.O. had 7 leaf's in the rear (WoW) he hauled lots of firewood now i know why the truck rode like a mule. so when i let the weight down on the front the old leaves just gave out and had a ridiculous negative arch.(Now for the really sad part)After the crappy lift was instaled i had to move it about 4-500 feet into our actual shop, so i fired up the 239k mile 22r and only made it about 200 yards and the engine made this horrific BANG-POP-POW-COUGH-CHUG-BANG noise and stalled. so i got out and looked and tried to turn the motor over and it was locked up tight. So i had an 82 2wd pickup that had rusted out but only had 180k on the 22r motor. so over my spring break i pulled the old motor and put the one from the 82 in. still had problems idling but more on that later. i decided i had to get some paint on this thing somehow so i spent about a solid day and a half sanding it down(excluding the bed) and then rattle canned it blue ( i think it turrned out pretty good) heres the link to the pic. http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/...95IMAG0019.jpg

So after painting that's when school started(august) and i had to put the project on hold until a week or so ago. I was going to get a carb kit to put in the old carb but ran up on a webber 32/36 brand new in the box for 50$ (luck) but i was going to install it the other day and found out that the kit was for a Nissan pickup, so i did a lil research and found out that the most of the 32/36 kits are the same they just have different adapters to mount to the intake manifold. so a quick trip to ebay i found a brand new adaptor and gaskets for 40$ and its currently in the mail. So i decided to put the old bed back on (biggest piece of crap you'll ever see) and fix the rear lights. so i got the bed back on and bolted down the other day and all the lights working and started tearing into the interior (ewww) there is a large hole in the floor pan ( pics of that tomorrow) that im going to weld in new metal and then bed-liner the entire floorpan. So i found some 4 in (approx 4in lift) leaf springs that we had and i didn't even know about. Thats the project i tackled today. So the front leaf's are in and i am going to have to get new stainless braided lines b/c of the large lift. (which now makes my 33's look small) and i need new longer shocks (CAN SOMEONE RECOMMEND A GOOD BRAND THAT WONT BREAK THE BANK) thanks. So tomorrow i am going to tackle the rear springs and hope that'll finish up most of the driveline (other than a locker) also i have been debating a lot whether or not to just weld up the front diff or get an aussie locker ( the truck will be driven daily eventually once i fix most of the 100,000 other problems it has) and would like to hear what other people think on the subject. (keep in mind it is a budget build on a broke high school kid budget) Im verry lucky to have all the tools to get this done.(welder, cutting torch, shop space, and lots of tools) This is how the truck sits currently (11/22/12) http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/...122_150856.jpg

Ok so not much progress today but i got both rear leaves out and the right rear re-installed and im going to have to get extended rear brake hose as well. I also need new rear shocks for a 4 in lift if someone can recommend a brand that wont break the bank that would be great.

Procomp 1000s Cheap as it gets for shocks.
I put them on a 91 pick up and they worked fine.
other than that junkyard, look for some f250s, or other.
You need to measure for your shocks before looking.

you wont have to order new stainless brake lines just go to the parts store and pickup up two new rear lines I think. you can do some research on that to make sure but if Im thinking correct the front brake lines has two female ends on the brake line and the rears have one male and one female you just screw the new rear brake line on to the old front line and now you have a longer line!

its a lot cheaper and I think the factory rubber lines are far superior to the stainless lines.

Ok first things first thanks dirtdobberoffroad for the tip about the double brakeline thing i found it on u tube you just ask for two rear hoses and then screw them into the stock hose and wola an extended line. And there only 12 dollars a piece thanks for that. Ok so i dont get out of school till 330 and 30 min to get to my truck and it gets dark at 530 and i almost have the leaf back in but anything that could go wrong did go wrong today lol. And it got dark be 4 i could get a pic of the floorpan. So i hope to be able to finish the leaves tomorrow .
