Groundpounder17’s ‘82 Pickup Dlx Build-up

I finally got my truck and have a list of things I need to do. First on my list is changing fluids.
I went ahead and ordered all the oils, grease, and fluids I’ll need from Amsoil.
-engine 10w-30
-transmission oil 80w-90
-transfer case oil 80w-90
-differential oils 80w-90
—while I’m at it I’ll rebuild the front knuckles and replace/repack the wheel bearings. Does anyone have a recommendation on the best place to get a knuckle rebuilt kit and bearings?
-change the coolant
-grease the fittings

Next week I’m going to see a guy about some interior parts and a piece for the tailgate.

Today I ordered a new windshield gasket/weatherstrip from Toyota. The old one is dry-rotted and has shrunk causing it to leak. The windshield has about a 1” spot that needs drilled glued. Should I fix this or get a replacement glass.

I also have to repair the body on the front hood and on the bed to prevent the rust from getting out of control. I’ll likely just do a temporary repair and spray it with primer for now

Looks like you've got a pretty nice starting point. What's the story with the hole, were they running a secondary fuel tank or something?

Yes, at some point it had a secondary tank and thus the hole on the right side of bed. The left side of the bed looks like it had an old cb antenna there. My goal is to temporarily repair those places to stop the rust until I can repaint the truck.

Well, I found out that the truck has been repainted after being told by the owner it is original paint. Whoever did it did a good job because I sure can’t tell. The only way I know is because I saw the badge on the firewall under the hood which shows 4A8, light beige.

I'm not convinced...Check under the hood. Unless someone did a ground-up restoration, they didn't paint the engine bay. You'll see a color difference. I think it is the color it says it is, though I admit it looks white...

Did you replace the top lip on the tailgate or is that just a protective coating? If you did replace it, where did you find it? Mine is missing that and I’m not even sure what to call it in a search.

no, I didn’t replace the top lip. That’s just some chrome piece the PO put on it. I plan to remove it when I repair the bed

Seems to me to be a great place for rust to get a real good foothold.

Just my opinion, for whatever that's worth.

If you don't find the tail gate cover piece, let me know, I have a few extras.
