1983 pickup ground up build
Im starting this build thread to document my 1983 toyota pickup build. I bought the truck as a body and frame for $100, the bed was too far gone so I saved what I could and sent it to scrap. The frame however was in perfect shape, the floor boards was rusted out around the middle set of body mounts.
A little background info: I have looked for a 1st gen for 3 years and either they wanted too much for one or I didn't have the money put back when a good deal came by.
This is the day I bought it, I checked over the frame and it's solid.
the floor boards need fixed around the middle set of body mounts through, the bed was too far gone so I stripped what I could save and scrapped tbe bed.
The plans for the truck is just a mild build for now and upgrade as the years pass.
For now I wanna do 2nd gen ruf, push the hanger 3/4" forward, hi steer, 4.10s, 32x11.50s (reasoning is because I already have two with 800 miles from a previous truck) axle armor, u-bolt flip kits, long slip drive shaft, stock rears, extended brake lines, 3.4 swap, 85 axles and some other stuff.
This is the axles I plan to swap under it. I plan to swap a IFS width rear under it and IFS hub swap my front axle later on along with a spool in the rear and a selectable locker up front and 4.88s.
The truck didn't have any doors when I bought it, I did some research and found some of the previous owners. One of the previous owners decided to keep the doors and when I contacted him he said I could have the doors if I came and picked them up. I went on a 2 hour road trip to get them and only spent $30 in gas there and back so I think it wasn't that bad.
I had a fellow toyota friend hook me up with some oem fenders for only $120 after shipping was paid for
My brother works at a junkyard so I only paid $200 for a 3.4 with 105k original miles!
I also scored a free hood and some chrome cab vents for free from a family friend. I scored a trail hear hanger from a friend of mine in a trade when I made him some furniture, this week my bushings for the frame tubes and 2nd gen ruf came in along with some 5" boomerang shackles.
The truck currently sits as a frame waiting for me to get some free time to get the axles under the frame and the cab back on.

I have recently been thinking, I have a 1987 4wd that I am parting out. It was project before this but since I found a 83 I lost interest in the 1987..Anyways I am gonna go ahead and grab some parts from the 1987and do the Ifs width rear axle and Ifs hub swap on the front axle. Grab the rear axle and Ifs hubs, steering box, rear leafs (to mix in with my ruf) and seats. I also need a steering column, wondering if the steering column from the 1987 would work? What else could I use from the 1987?

Nice! IDK that the tank will bolt up, but at least the electrical will. I'm running the complete harness from the Tacoma I pulled the 3rz out of in my '83
