Need some help in Layton

Hey all,

Im in need of some overall help on my new purchase of an 88 4Runner 3vze.

I am having some fuel issues and im not sure how to pinpoint the issue.

If anyone would be willing to spend some time mentoring me while i do all the hard work, i would really appreciate it, and im sure i could find some way to repay the favor.

Thanks in advance,

Danny

how have you decided it is a fuel problem?
what have you checked so far and how?
do you have a meter?
do you have an engine wiring diagram (EWD)?

Thanks for the reply!

I have burned through 3/4 of a tank of gas in 55 miles, also cylinder 3 spark plug was fouled with fuel.

Also when I let off the gas at high speeds, I get some crackling in the cat like little backfires.

I replaced the injectors due to a cylinder 4 misfire and that’s when this issue started.

It also has a hard time starting. It turns over for about 7 seconds before starting whereas before the injector replacement it was like 2 seconds max.

I tore back into it to see if any connections were loose and there was a bit of standing fuel in the intake plenum just inside the cold start injector and EGR valve.

i don’t have a meter and have seen wiring diagrams floating around here, but I’m fairly confident it’s a fuel issue at this point. I could be wrong though.

HI Danny,
You definitely need a multi-meter. (Pls see my signature)
Gotta verify and be absolutely sure if you have spark or fuel. You could not be absolutely sure, neither can we.

Re: connections
Checked absolutely ALL wiring to injectors, especially between injector and ECU. On our 22RE's there is a crimp/splice on the Injector to ECU wires that corrodes and easily breaks. (See ZeroKelvin's Thread) that could very well be the cause of your misfire. (Pls see my signature)

Cheers!

Turns out it was a stuck injector that I just purchased and installed. All is well and back to normal.

I just purchased the vehicle and completely agreed with the "3.slow" title it received, but man, after getting the injector issues sorted out, this things got some pep (comparatively speaking)!

Thanks for the replies.
