tow rig/ daily driver

was out wheeling today and broke my 87 pickup haha ended up having to have it towed. this brought me to the decision its time for a newer daily driver that can double as a tow rig (In case this happens agian). Ive been looking at diesels all the ones in my area in my price range are either really high mileage 250k+ or a 6.0. I wouldnt mind getting a 6.0 found one with 4x4 130,000 miles for $9000 but I'm not sure if I want the maintenance cost that come with a diesel and that it still needs to be "bullet proofed". On the other hand I have found several extremely nice gassers 3/4 and 1 ton with around 130,000 miles many with barley over 100,000 miles for around $8000. just looking for a little bit of guidance. like i said it will be my daily driver and tow rig while im doing a SAS. I really like these 2

Are you set on a Ford? Everyone I know with a 6.0 power stroke has problems with it. Even one at my work, the injection pump went at like 70k miles.
I haven't found anything bad to say about my Duramax

Go get yourself a 2wd shortbed pickup with a 5.7l engine, and Put a good class five hitch in it.

If you feel froggy put a corporate 14 bolt axle in it. Much cheaper to keep than some of these diesel trucks. If you can find one with the 700r4 for a really good granny gear.

Short wheelbase vehicles don't do well as tow rigs. Depending on the overall condition of the vehicle maintenance costs could be a wash, and a 700R4 doesn't have a "granny gear" also isn't known for it living long in a towing environment.

Found several older suburbans for great deals. How would a 80's early 90's f150 work?

I know 700r4's have a first gear ratio that is too low for drag racing. It also has two planetary gearsets to fix that and cost stupid $$$$$. Hence I call it a granny gear.

Never blew a 700r4 but I have blown 4l60E's So I have to figure its build quality. I know for racing all you need is the case, the rest is junk. So I can see if you pull a big trailer frequently it will fail without at least some internal Mods to keep it from overheating.

You are right about shorty's being a problem for towing all the time, but they are cheap and fifth wheels tow the best.

I have a '99 suburban, 5.7L with hitch, paid $800 for it. Put a trans in it with a 12,000BTU cooler out front. No problems at all.
