Jeep Fuel Pump Problems
Hey everyone, so my friends parents have a 1990 Jeep Wrangler and they're having problems with it so I'm trying to help them out.
When your driving down the road it will just automatically shut off because the fuel pump will quit working. Well after taking a look I have found out that the previous owner abandoned the old wiring to the fuel pump and put their own wiring in. They ran the positive wire off the fuel pump relay ( to my knowledge ) and then they ran the ground wire straight to the battery. Now there were a million splices in their wiring and they even used wire nuts. I went through and butt spliced everything to try and eliminate wiring issues and it still does it.
Now here's the thing, when the fuel pump quits, the positive wire gets really hot. I have no idea why, but I would think this would indicate a short or lack of ground?
What do you guys think, is there a bad connection somewhere or do you think maybe the fuel pump has gone bad?
I'm just trying to help them out and I'd really like to get this figured out for them so that they don't have to go to a shop and get ripped off.
Thanks

the wire may not be heavy enough to carry the load the pump puts on it. also if it has a lot of splices it could cause more resistance which could cause it to get hot.
