85 Celica GTS Convertible - junk yard bound!
I have spent weeks on the internet researching a miss that I have in between 2000 - 3000rpm. I have read hunders of complaints with the same exact symptoms as I have, but no fix? I have changed all ignition components, checked vavle clearance, vacum leaks, sensors and so on...
I have the dealers stumped too! Dont tell me that I need to take my 1985 Celica GTS convertible to the junk yard?! It has come to that point though...The car is in awsome condition cosmetically and mechanically, excpet for the miss in a certain rev range that makes the car hard to drive.
I wouldnt feel right dumping it and walking away from it, but....
Please help!

I'll dump it @ your house for $3000
Check and see what they go for on e-bay...especialy around the pacific North west and East coast! People are asking $7k for a nice one!
Hell, maybe I'll put it on e-bay.
I've got a picture if anybody wants to see it....

The engine itself is still tight. The problem is coming from the electronics of the fuel injection or emissions.
I did perform a ohm test on the Mass Air Flow meter...It was slightly out of spec...1.94 ohms, spec is min 2.0. I dont know if this is enough to give me these problems.
I dont want to blow a couple hundred bucks to find out it was not the problem.
I do like the idea of a turbo kit on the 22RE....

toyota's are very sentimental with plug wires and spark plugs also check out the caytilatic converter may be clogged if not and you are going to junk the car i will trade for a 89 4x4 pu 22re in it

I agree, could be the catalytic converter, happened on my old car.

I think I had a break through last night!
I pulled a vacuum line that runs from the intake plenum to the vacuum modulator for the EGR valve and it ran perfect! The miss was gone! As soon as I hook the line back in, it misses. I know this line is suposed to do something, so I dont want to leave it unplugged...it will probably mess something up down stream.
Now the question is...what does this vacuum hose do? Does the vacuum modulator need replacing or does this vacuum line operate something through the modulator that needs replacing?
The EGR valve tested fine. The vacuum line is not clogged. THe inlet on the intake plenum is not clogged. A new vacuum modulator is $65...I dont want to buy it and then figure out that it is something down stream of it that's not working. I have spent enough money on parts I did not need!

I checked FSM 85 truck to test the vacuum modulator are:
disconnect the 2 vacuum hoses from the modulator
plug one pipe with your finger
blow air into the other pipe and check that the air passes through to the air filter side freely(this air filter is on the modulator and is removeable and can be cleaned with air gun)
start engine and maintain the speed at 4000 RPM
repeat the above test and check that there is a strong resistance to air flow
reconnect the vacuum hoses to proper location
If problem is found replace modulator

Doug - Thanks for the help.
I removed the modulator and cleaned it last night...The Celica ran perfect with the modulator totally removed! As soon as I hooked it up, starting missing.
There seemed to be a diaphram in the bottom portion of the modulator...is there any way to check the diaphram? I blew air through the modulator..it would only blow through one of the ports.
Thanks.
Will

This test will check the bvsv, egr, vacuum modulator
Install a "t" fitting to the hose that goes between the EGR and vacuum modulator
Start engine
With a cold engine you should have 0 vacuum @4000 RPM
warm up engine
check that the vacuum guage reads low vacuum @4000 RPM
apply vacuum directly to EGR
check that the engine runs rough or dies
I just went an pulled a modulator off a junk 22re in my garage, I dont see any way to get to diaphram.I can get air to blow through only one port also, the FSM is vage on if you should be able to blow in both ports or not, but the picture shows them blowing in on the side that goes to the BVSV and air going out the filter. So my advice is to conect the vacuum line from the BVSV to the side you can blow in. One thing I have done is hook a vacuum pump up to my EGR and put as much vacuum a hand held pump will suck to hyper open the EGR and free up any carbon on the seal it usually helps and has never made it run worse.

Doug,
Thanks, I will try your advice with the "T" fitting vacuum check.
From what I see, the modulator only connects to the throttle body, EGR and BVSV...I would think that it has to be one of those components that are not functioning; if by removing the modulator the car runs perfect.
I did swap out the modulator with one from the junk yard...made no difference...unless they are both bad?

Any luck yet. I have had the same problem on 3 or 4 22r & 22re engines never was able to fix the miss, gave up, the truck got good MPG and had as much power as a 2.4L will give up. But I think you should look at the EGR if you have hi millage on your 22re and who does'nt you have carbon in the EGR clean it with gun solvent or get a new one. I have only had trucks other than my 85 supra but have worked on a few celica GTS and I will own one oneday.Yours is is about the same condition as my 84 4runner it is so nice to drive a 20+ year old truck and can still turn heads. let me know how things are going I'm stumped. And if you are serious about getting rid of your car let me know.

Mr. Mud
I haven't had a chance to try the "T" fitting vacuum test yet. We have been having some nasty weather here in Corona, Ca (Riverside County)....It's been 100+ degrees, raining and humid as hell! We actually had 3 Tornado's touch down this weekend!
I will try the test hopefully today if weather permits.
San Jose huh?! The wife and I are actually going to the Garlic festival in Gilroy this weekend...
I'll let you know the outcome of the Celica. THanks for your help!
