Well a friend of mine who is a excellent old school mechanic came by for a visit and insisted not to install the fuel cell. Said that if I did then I would need to build a fire wall.
A lot more work that I just don't want to do.
So I still have OE fuel tank, I'm going to put it back in.
I will have to re-route exhaust to another location, but I know what i'm going to do and it will be awesome.
I had to patch the OE tank and it came out great.
Will fab in a fuel spout/neck as I will still have to fill from trunk as car has been shaved, including fuel door. That's okay as I just need to vent fuel spout and will vent under the trunk rather then in it.

PO cut out a piece of tank, probably for a patch piece.



I had my radiator buddy fix it. Thank god.

 

The tank is neat and clean inside... good to have that kind of useful advice before it's too late regarding the fuel cell/firewall...

 

Just to dangerous, a fire waiting to happen, especially a rear ender.
And the tank in the pic's was cleaned and probably relined inside with Kreem tank liner before PO decided to take a chunk out of it.

 

I recieved parts for fuel tank, sending unit, filler neck hose.

I'm going to have to do some bending to fab in fuel filler neck
I talked to my local muffler shop guy and he said he could put it on his bender.

It's still coming slow, but starting to make some progress.

 

Looks good... don't forget to lock wire those bolts that's what the hole in the head is for.

 

Good eye, but unfortunately I'm going to scrap OE tank.
I hadn't noticed that there was two broken easy outs on tank for sending unit. There pretty small.
I thought it was just broken screws, but when I couldn't drill them out I knew I was in trouble.

That's probably why PO cut hole in tank for patch piece, because it wasn't worth fixing.
Machine shop with an EDM could remove easy outs, but for the cost its not worth it.

Just have to pony up and go the route I should have from day one.
Alot of ------ right now.

I will post up with the fix (with pics) when I take care of some returns and get new parts.

 

The fuel tank issue just isnt wanting to cooperate with you. One of my machine shop guys thinks those easy outs out to be outlawed. I have broken the hard ones as they get brittle. All they ever did is make a bad job worse for me.

When I was in California, that is one thing the yards took out of the cars. I dont know if they just arent allowed to sell used fuel tanks or what. It put me in a bind when I was needing one when I was out there. I can feel your frustration and then the time that gets used up when it goes backwards on you. Time just isnt enough sometimes.

Yea, regarding fuel tanks from bone yards
California has more regulations then ants on a corn farm.
I believe its a environmental issue, frikin nanny state!
The only set back is the time I wasted and money.
However I know I would hit some road blocks.

What I'm going to do is put in a 66 Ford Mustang tank submerged in trunk.
I was just trying to use what parts I had and avoid re-inventing the wheel.
I've done a couple of these with a buddy of mine in his shoebox's a couple of years ago. He's had a good laugh at me lately lol.

It's not that hard to do at all.

 

Looks good... only problem is you can't use the trunk anymore with that filler neck sitting right in the middle because the piping to get it over to the filler neck on the body side would get in the way... Also you end up with a lot of extra fuel in the neck which might not be that safe.... hmm could you mount the tank with the filler neck at the back of the trunk and plumb it across the back of the tank to the filler? you could fab a protective shield for the piping and still have a useable trunk that way.

**Bing!** idea!... what about a pair of tanks off a Jaguar? they sit in the rear 1/4s with a filler on each side. or a tank off a Mercedes 300 they sit against the back of the seat with no firewall separation that would be a doable option.

 

I won't be needing any trunk space.
Most shoebox's with trunk mounted fuel tanks also comprise of a battery or air tank for air bags or both.
Real common tank mod.

I won't be doing any long enough trips for the trunk use anyway.
Local car shows mainly, perhaps Viva Las Vegas, but Old Flatty's don't like hot weather desert runs (head gaskets)
It's just gonna be an old hot rod, skulls, fuzzy dice, rear window club plaque, Indian blanket seat covers, sittin low, leather jacket, slicked back hair with a cow lick LOL!, porky's (the movie) pig horn, (no aahogga), headers to straight pipes with megaphone tips, bias ply radials and the list goes on. Note: Wife will not be allowed in Shoebox at anytime!

Fun project though, zero rust underneath, a little on roof rails.
Rewired and 12 volted. 170 CI with 3 of them on the tree, awesome gas mileage. another one I miss

Made a template cut it out and tanks fits real nice.

Just the easy stuff now, clean, por 15, undercoat, paint and bolt in tank and hook up wiring

 

What was the original rectangle panel hole for? a spare tire well?
