My brother in law has a 2006 Ford Escape 3.0 AWD. One day the transmission started giving him fits. It will go into gear right after startup (if it's been sitting a while), but will inevitably just stop propelling, regardless of forward or reverse. It's like it just slips into neutral. When that happens, you can't make it re-engage. It just sits and revs. There is no CEL or other dummy lights, it just sits there with the motor running but no gears. Personally, transmissions scare me, and transmission shops scare me even more. Any ideas?

 

He smoked the trans. Pull it yourself and have it rebuilt of find a good used one.

 

Thanks for the info - that sounds like the ugly truth. The Escapes apparently have bad trannys to start with.
