I am parting out a 1986 toyota turbo 4x4. I am keeping the motor and all of the wiring harness. I am selling the axles, or differentials. They should be the 3.42 gears. I will sell other stuff too.I am in central minnesota. If interested send a pm or email at flip660@yahoo.com thanks

3.42 gears? I dont think so. All turbos ran 4.10 gearing.

I just went out and looked, there are no tags on either axle. So I did the old spin and count technique. You do one full revolution of the tire and count the driveshaft revolutions. Then double the driveshaft revs. I counted 1 and almost 3/4 turns which doubled is right around 3.42. If you want I can give you axle codes or whatever numbers you want off of the tags and you can call a yota dealer and ask him. thanks

Ya, pass em on and I'll research them. I hate to drive my truck on 3:42's lol... especially on 33's. I doubt it would turn them... Thanks for checking.

Thats cause you have a 2WD. No 4x4 turbo ever came with anything but a 4.10 ratio rearend. (in the US)

You stated it was 4x4. So unless its been changed, its a 4.10. Thats the ONLY OPTION they made for 85-88 Turbo trucks and 4runners.

The 4.88 ratio was NEVER an option until 1992. Where do you guys get your information from? In terms of STOCK equipment, you are wrong.

a guy in town has a 87 Turbo 4runner with the auto, 1 owner, he bought it off the showroom floor new, i was in the local 4x4 shop when he was doing his lift,bumpers, regear, etc, we counted teeth and they were the 4.88 ratio (i 4get the teeth #'s it was a few years ago) he sold them on ebay as 4.88s

thats where i got my info from, and it is safe to say that was stock equipment being the 1st time the diff was pulled out ever

Then you either A. Counted the teeth wrong or B. it was switched out. turbo Trucks NEVER CAME WITH 4.88 DIFFS. Ever.

The Turbo autos used the 4.10 diff just the same as all the other turbo trucks and 4runners. In 1987, the only TWO options for 4x4 diffs were 4.10 and 4.30; the non-turbo autos got the 4.30 diffs, and all MT and Turbos had 4.10 ratio rear ends.

I wonder if the shop messed up and put his 4.10 gears back in, and he sold his new 4.88's lol. That would be bad times.
Perhaps your friend really did have 4.88 diffs, but I can garuntee you 100% they did not originally come stock from his 1987 4Runner.

I have read in a few articles in past magazines, how to build a toy, how to but a toy, and what came in your toy, that turbo trucks came with a 3.42 gear ratio. I'm not making this up.I will pull the 3rd member this weekend and find out for sure. I will even photograph it and put it on here. I did give the vin to a member on here and he will look into it. I don't know where there are any more tags. If you know of some more tag locations feel free to let me know. thanks.

3.42 was available in 2wd trucks only.

Look under the hood at the info plate (silver, center of firewall) and give me the info on it. There will be a part that says A/TM. That is the Axle/Trans mission code. Type it up, and I will tell you what you have.

btw you DO have a 4x4 right?!

Ok went out and looked at it here are the numbers 033 FZ41 G292 R151F
Model # RNGL MBZA. Yes it is a 4x4. I have been looking for this truck a long time and I found a guy that has another. Very reasonable too. If you would look this up and let me know it would be greatly appreciated, thanks

ok, here goes:

033 is Truck color code (silver?)
FZ41 is interior color and pattern code
G292 is diff code (4.10)
R151F is trans code (4 cyl turbo gear drive forward shift case)

As for the diff:

G=8.0" All 4x4 4Runners and Pickups
29= 4.10 Gear ratio
2= 2 pinion diff

In order to get a 3.42 ratio, you would have to have a G382 or G384 axle code.

SO, you can clearly see, the truck has/had 4.10 gearing.

btw the info is here: http://toyota.off-road.com/toyota/ar....jsp?id=274535
and here: http://www.toysport.com/Technical%20...ifications.htm

Thanks for the help. I do appreciate it. The axles do have 4.10 gears. But who needs 4.10s it seems like everyone has a set of them around somewhere. thanks again.
