What about going with the 3.4 also--Since you are undertaking such a large project?

I've considered it. I am not quite ready to take that on yet and cost wise I can only do the 5-speed right now. I think this will hold me over for a few years and eventually I will just find a 3rd gen to buy. Plus I need something I can do in a weekend since it is my DD.

I actually found a motor and transmission from a 3rd gen that was tempting. It was on ebay and was $750 for both--pickup only in TN.

Thanks for the suggestion though, it would defenitly be pretty sweet to put one of those engines in my runner.

I do have a question quick. There is an R150F and t-case in Denver that I could go down and pickup. But the guy wants $250 and it already has 150K on it. any thoughts or suggestions? I will see if I can offer him a bit lower since I can pick up with cash-- so no paypal fees or the hassle of packing it up for shipping and all that.
I just don't want to pay a lot and then have to go ahead and buy a new transmission 5K miles down the road.

these two items are supposed to be good for AT LEAST 200k. I have one that has 165k on the clock and it worked fine. you really wont know if it is good or not until you spin it up and listen for the bearings (thats if you dont take it apart). Also make sure you are getting the right transfer case to line up to your front diff.

If it were me--i would wait until somebody has one here on YT and somebody else knows them--that way you know what kind of history the part(s) have.

Updated the list of items I need. Thanks for the advice. I have the option of a parts truck that runs with a knock in town here for $300.. which would be nice since it has everything I need and more since it would have the engine there as well.. but the transmission has 200K on it and I live in an apartment, so don't have any place to park a junker to just take parts off it as needed. otherwise it would be great!

the other option is from someone on this site that has one with only 100K on it and all the parts for the install, minus a few of the things that I listed above. He will be traveling through so will be able to deliver it for me since he already was planning on coming through. Yes! As great as it would be to have the truck with all the parts, I think I need to just focus on what I need right now and that is the transmission with half the miles, so I am 90% sure I will do that.
