What size tire/wheel combo do you run?
1990 4x4.... 22re, its bone stock and a daily driver. I'm looking to buy wheels and tires in the near future. I think i will go with 15x8 rims, but I'm not sure what size tire. I will need an all terrain, and gas mileage is a concern.
I want to see pictures of your set up, and If i copy it, I will award you 2500 internet points!

I'll give ya 500 internet points just for replying!
I looked through the picture threads, but there isn't really much wheel/tire specific information.
What wheel do yota geniuses think would look best? I am very open to suggestions.

Chef, that 4-runner is SEXY..... I've always had a soft spot for factory rims wrapped in meaty tires..... and those tires look great too. Very nice!
2500 internet points to you sir. Do with them what you will.

Why THANK YOU, SIR! I believe I will call Jessica Alba and tell her, "GET OVER HERE... I got my 2500 points.... You owe me dinner!" hahaha. Jk, but seriously, thanks
The pics with the factory rims, which I REALLY like, big time(like you have) are 31's... I mean, I can't speak for anyone else, ...and I know many don't agree... But these BFG AT/KO's have been VERY good tires to me, 3 different sets now on different vehicles. The last set I just replaced? 109K miles on them, ...and I still had enough tread to sell them for 150$ for 4!
They fit right on, no rubbing at all... And they'll give you a lil UP and more cushion when off roading.. Plus, they have a tri-ply side wall... Some don't like them in the rain, but I've not had that problem.. not sure why. They ARE NOT great for snow... So keep that in mind... But I've used and got out of plenty with mine in the snow as well.. So I just think they've been the best higher dollar investment for me over 3 different rigs(and 2 times on this one
)
Best wishes and happy shopping, man. There are LOTS of good brands out there, now... Used to be the BFG's were pretty much the MOSTLY 'go to' tire for 'all terrain'.. NOW, meh, you can find LOTS of other good brands that serve people well. I just PERSONALLY prefer these... So that is what it is... My opinion, lol.

I ran some 31/10.5 KM2s for a while on an American Racing aluminum rim. I really liked this setup. Not too loud on the road and great traction off the road.
If MPGs are a concerns, I would run an aluminum wheel (like your factory wheels). Less weight is less rolling resistance. Throw some 31s on em and go.

Im now running a sporttrack A/T 31/10.5 on a steel wheel..there ok, but I wont get them again...

Toyota has some very nice factory rims, I'll give them credit on that for sure. Obviously staying with a stock rim, and just upgrading the tire will be the cheapest option. Decisions Decisions.
Kiyo, Those 3rd gen wheels look sharp on that 4runner, digging that look.
Lycan, I sure wish my rims were that clean.... the clear coat is coming off, so they have a constant dirty spotted look.
2500 Internet points to you all.... This is going to get expensive!

You can buff those down, slap a coat of "alumicote" on them and call it a day, OP! You already have a set of 5 rims that are worth a couple hundred bucks, minimum(that would save you, more importantly, at least a couple hundred toward some nice tires).
PS> I paid 162$ each for mine, 700$ installed, out the door. Worked with a buddy's shop and they paid the tax. BFG AT/KO's come, for cheap, with lifetime roadside hazard warranty, too... another thing that I love. Also, very common tire, so the spare can be had for 50$, max, on the fifth tire.
PSS> www.treadwright.com has a pretty great reputation, even in reviews by 4Wheel Magazine, 4x4Wire I believe, etc. 450$ or so to your door for 4 tires????????
.......then, you could go for the Guard Dogs for what? >>>> 105$ each? Hmmmmmm

I think I've decided to go with the BFG AT, like you have Chef. Although, the tread pattern on those Guard Dog AT are pretty dang sweet looking.
I replaced the factory steel wheels with those rims, I see them more on 4runners then trucks around here...they had sit for awhile, and that crud just wont come off. I think I can find a nice set of the same rims for cheap on the local Craigslist. I really like the look of those tires on these rims.
Here's another 2500 internet points, and the next round is on me!

Hey Jason,
I get what looks like a calcium build up on mine. Could be equated to a 'clear cote peel'???? Ive used a plastic scraper and got it off... but after thinking it was like a clear cote, .....it came back! lol. Could just be a coastal thing? NO clue, but now I just work em with hand cleaner, like you said, each washing, and cleans right up. They're not bad enough unless you look RIGHT CLOSE.... so meh, whatever.
OP, you could maybe sell the ones you got when you find your new set? But I'd honestly try to use every method you can to try to clean em up... I've never seen them NOT clean up, to be honest. they make these reaaaaaaaally coarse scotch pads, they're purple... I've seen those work really well for ppl too.

I will try that, I had never thought of the hand cleaner....I have used SOS pads, and multiple cleaners like Simple green. I will take a close of picture of the wheel and upload it.

I really liked the look of stock alloys on my truck, but unfortunately they wouldn't work with a 33x12.5 tire, or a 35"+ if I decide to go bigger in the future. If you want to clean them up, try using a sanding sponge and some elbow grease to get the peeling away. Hand cleaner and simple green are great cleaners - never heard of using them on wheels, but I don't doubt it since they work great on grease. I've seen some really nice pics of stock alloys that were partially painted - the recesses of the wheels were painted black, and all the flat + perimeter were left aluminum silver, then I think everything was clear coated. It just kinda accents the original look.
A 31 is already technically oversized for stock gears - but still not underpowered and gives good MPGs. I would stick with 31 or 32" tire unless you're ready for gears too. You have lots of options for a 31" tire and they're much cheaper than larger tires.
Here's my truck below. I went from 31" Michelins on stock alloys to 33x12.5 Toyo's on 15x8 (3.5 BS) Pacer wheels (which are almost identical to Outlaw IIs). I have 4.88s and a rear locker. My truck doesn't run the best, but I get around 18-19mpg hwy and usually drive around 75mph/3000rpms.

I believe both 4runners flanking me have 33x10.5s on 15x8 black steelies, but backspacing closer to stock.

sorry no pics, but i put a set "fierce attitude" in size 285 70 15 on the stock alloy wheels on my daughters rig about a year ago, they look absolutly awesome and perform even better. i rotate them often and they still look like new.very happy with these so far check them out they have a very interesting tread, look close.

I ended up purchasing 31/10.50 BFG/AT-KO from tirerack.com 775.00 after shipping.
The stock alloys partially painted sounds interesting, I can do amazing things with a can of krylon spray paint! LOL.
Has there been a tech write up by some one restoring these wheels?
