Tires, Which Ones?

I'm sure this has been asked before but i couldn't find it so here I go.

I am hoping to get my first set of tires sometime in the next month or two and my brother told me that the BFG MT/R's are good for on and off road and after looking at some reviews on them the results don't help that much because some people say best tires ever while others say they suck. Most of the reviews haven't been specified to 4runners though which led me here.

I will probably run off-road every weekend and a day or two during the week and other than that I plan for them to be my daily drivers when I get a new set of tires. Some of the bad reviews led me to looking into the BFG All Terains because most people said they were better on road.

I am looking for some true 4runner owners/lovers to help me decide if the BFG MT/R's are a good tire for me, because I really like them, or if I need some other tire that will be good off-road but still be good off-road.

Sorry it was so long,

Mark

Buy the tire for what you want it to do is the best advise I can give you. I had an 86 Toy with 31" mud terrains and loved them. Yes they are noisy compared to ATs, but what do you want to do? Currently I am running some Pro Comp Extream Muds on an expidition, they are fairly noisy now, about 50% wear, but they take the truck where I want it to go and I don't worry about getting back. Before that I had the BFG ATs and while they are good, I dared not try any deep mud with them. I would not hesitate buying them again.

I also have a 95 runner that I just put some 31" Yokohama MTs on. They are noisy and rough up to about 10 mph, after that they really smooth out and quiet down! I was very impressed with that alone. I also just took them out and hit a couple of quick trails this evening. They dig in sand, don't hit the go button too hard! Tried them out on a couple hills and they did an excellent job, without airing down, grabing onto the surface and climbing up without too much fuss. One day into them and I like em.

Again buy the tire for what you want to do with it. If you value off road use over daily use and don't mind exta noise or a rougher ride, then go with the MTs, you won't regret it. If you listen to others and don't follow your heart, you may regret it. Finally if it really bothers you get some cheap ATs or even street tires on another set of rims and swap tires when you plan to off road, that way you don't chew up the MTs on pavement and save those critters for when you want them.

BFG just changed the MT to the KM2, thjis tire looks awesome but I heard it's loud. I run Goodyear MT's but they are discontinued. I had mine siped and they really quieted down. If you really get on it in the mud and stuff go with a MT if it's just dirt an AT will do just fine. All my friends have AT's and the only place I can "out do" them is in the snow and the mud in my MT's.

What is the average life for the MT's if I drive 70% on road and 30% off road?

I've had Procomp Extreme All Terrains for about 3k miles. 31-10.5-R15

They are quieter on the road than my 265/70/16 bridgestone dueler AT's.

They grip loose dirt a million times better.

They grip rock a million times better.

Wet asphalt? It hasn't rained since I've had them, but they appear to have good siping that will move water right out of the way.

They also have a 40k mile warranty which is stellar for an offroad tire.

They dont grip rocks as well as my buddies Procomp Xterrains, but the other qualities more than make up for it.

If you are looking for tires that blow every all terrain out of the water but aren't quite swampers or KM-2's. i'd recommend them.

My best guess, with my pro comp XMT is about 30K, perhaps a few more. My BFG ATs did not get much more than that, both on my expedition. I have some Yokohama MTs on the runner now and I must say they are not wearing well.
