which tires are for me?
I'm up in the air over finding new tires. I have a 2004 4Runner Sport V8 I'm looking for something aggressive but also something that rides on the highway good, I do deal with plenty of snow in the winter and I take it off road on the fire trails to get to the river with my german shepherds, I live in the country. Original size recommended is 265/65R17 i'd like to go with one size taller 275/70R17 is this possible? can anyone reccommend a few good tire options for me? i'm just a chick that likes a good quality truck, Toyota's have worked great for me for the past 15 years and would never think of purchasing anything else. Thanks in advance.

BigBluePile questioning your reply to me. are you telling me that you use these tires on your '06 4Runner Sport 270/65R17 BFG All Terrain KO's how is the ride? is it a rough ride? These are the tires I was originally looking at but i'm being told that it's a 10ply tire which will give me a stiffer ride. I was told they last a long time but don't want to get stuck with them if they ride hard on regular roads.

I've had BFG's on two different rigs and have never been let down. The '06 rides just fine and works great on or offroad. Those tires will do great on the ice packed snow roads. Well, the only reason I can think they would ride rough is if you air them up to the max pressure. If you plan on hauling anything, you won't have to worry about your tires.

I'd DEFINITELY Recommend the BFG A/T KO's. I installed them on both my DD and my bro's 91 4Runner last year. They are a time tested tire with a lot of capability and they wear well too. I also think they really add to the look of a rig while making it a great year round vehicle. I've never had an issue with them riding hard or rough. My step-father also has them on his 4x4 Dodge Diesel. They work Great!! The only place I've had any issue with them is super sticky mud, but even packed with mud, they continue to claw their way through. I'm hoping right deal comes along so I can get a set for my wheeler too.

I have 70K on my 31x10.50 BFG AT/KO's... still have 40% tread. They ride smooth, quiet enough and have been plenty capable for moderate to SOMETIMES a lil more aggressive off roading.. That along with better mileage from my former rig with MT's... well, there are SO MANY variables....but the BFG's are A SOLID TIRE and the AT's last A VERY LONG TIME, ...plus they're fairly capable. Gotta love the Tri-Wall, btw... if you're ever in tight spots, rubbing up on rocks, etc., ...mine have taken a beating over the years and never had one pop.

I also say go with the BFG AT KO's, see my pic. My wheels are 17" as well. I would recommend 265/70/17(the same size I am running), they are the same width as the ones you have now, but just about an inch taller in overall diameter. The 265/65/17 you have now are closer to a 31", just go up to the 70 series and it will make it closer to a 32", they'll look great, trust me. The BFG's will last forever, especially if you rotate them often. This is my personal opinion, I don't think too many ppl will disagree with me. I've been swappin' wheels/tires for 17 years now, trust me!! The 275/70/17 will not help ya any, they're just about 1/2"-3/4" wider, and not really any taller according to the stats on tirerack.com

If you see a lot more paved miles there's better choices than BFGs which rock off road but their on road manners have left me with desiring much more for such a pricey tire. Wet weather was one of the weak points that both my Nitto TGs and my current Duratracs have much better margin of error when it comes to hydroplaning. BFGs wear like rocks (hence some people getting alot of miles) but I don't like driving on rocks.
Great tire off road but overall BFGs are a bit over rated for what you pay.

X-AWD I somewhat agree with ya. The Duratrac's look and perform good in rain, snow and mud, but they're squirrely on the highway, and they wear out in 30-40,000 miles. It's totally a matter of opinion, and of course I respect yours, I just don't like to buy tires every 2-2.5 yrs!! The Terra Grappler is a nice tire as well, probably almost same performance stats as the Duratrac, also tend to wear abnormally quickly. Another thing worth mentioning is that all three tires mentioned, BFG At's, Duratrac & TG, they're are basically the same price within like $10-$15 per tire (depending on who you are purchasing from)......

i have a set of bfg ats on my 95 4runner. i like that the tire absorbs the little bumps in the road and giving a soft ride while at the same time having a decent sidewall stiffness to give me better control piloting the rig. keep in mind i have 35's but the tire itself is a great long lasting tire. they get a bad rap for a rough ride because the tire says max inf. 55 psi so people air them up ehrn you could be fin at 26 psi. my point is air pressure and rotation will help a ton. bfg's are a little pricey but you will be impressed with the performance and the fact that you can hardly hear them with the windows down they are quiet too. you could expect 3-4 years or more out of these tires

If you aren't in a hurry and keep your eyes open, you can get a decent deal on tires. I got my bfg's for the XJ for like $600, granted they are 30x9.50r15s, but 4WheelParts had a good deal going on them. My bro got his 31s for not much more.
