Good point, I was looking at 90 through 01 yota wheels because I thought I had read on here that the newer 4runner, tacoma and tundra wheels would not fit properly. I think I need to do some more reading.
I hate that e, I live in Myrtle Beach and everyday theres some guy with 28' inch low profile rims and tires on a stock 4x4. I only wish I could pull out in front of them just as I'm coming off a mud run and he'd be stuck behind me in my mud sprinkler for miles.

 

Well, I have been rereading this thread looking to see if I missed something here and I guess I did. If I'm thinking right by changing the backspacing it changes the arc by which the wheel travels thus causing rub.

Changing wheels to factory backspacing fixes rub...New tires fixes shaking and shimmies...New speedo cable fixes jumping and possible cruse issues.

Cranking up the torsion bars puts it at a higher stance (12 to 13.5) now the fender clears the wheel...as in post #18.

Didn't you get the rims & tires from the guy for $300. in post 43? what about the bone yard rims?

I got a bit lost with everything here...

yep I'm going to change the tires and rims, I won't be able to get the new meat until next week, possibly this weekend. I'm gonna go with a stock wheel with stock backspacing. Once that's done I'll check the torsion bar deal. From what I've read doing so will make the ride bumpier than it is.

Alright guys I didn't get the rims and tires from scknight. He lived an hour and a half away and I got beat to em. Just so I'm straight though I am only allowed to buy toyota truck and 4runner rims from 90 - 01 is that correct. I found a lot of wheels that are six lug, but the back spacing being correct is something I'd like to avoid.

For example I find a lot of these but don't know if they will work like the oem will.

Those don't look stock to me however they do look like the ones I used to have on my old 86. Just make sure they are 8" or better or some dealers will not mount anything larger than a 10.5 wide tire on them.

I also want to make sure my rusty hubs are covered. I'd rebuild them and go manual if I had the cash and know how. It would look pretty stupid to have rusty hubs and all that chrome. I'm not a huge fan of chrome, when it comes to clean up.

 

I have been told by folks in this forum that AISIN hubs will just bolt up without a problem. I have seen them for as little as $80 here, craigslist and on ebay. Just a little paint will take care of any cosmetics. You can also paint your hubs, just clean real well and scuff sand. Make sure you use something like acetone to take off all the grease or the paint wont stick.

 

Ok I might have the same problem, seems like my passenger side tire wears out more. My steering wheel has to be held just like his at an angle to keep it straight on the road, There is ocassional rubbing on the same area as he has shown. My vibrations are not as bad at least that is what I think. I just got my truck 3 weeks ago 91 Xtra Cab 4x4 with eagle alloys i am guessing they are 15x8 Wheels tires are 31"10.5x15 BF All Terrain. I will post some pic after this weekend. I am thinking going back to stock wheels if i can find some will this help.

 

It is worth a try. You might see if someone you know has some factory wheels with 31s that you can bolt on to see if that is the issue. That would be the cheapest option.

a. do I have to stick to stock wheels meaning 90 though 01 truck 4runner or can I get what Tnrabbit did and grab 06 tacoma wheels?
b. Lots of you guys have the soft 8's which N8 sugested, lets get some feedback on how the roll and if the backspacing is correct, I'm guessing back spacing cannot be adjusted.

I'm asking because oem wheels from 3rd gen. 4runners aren't cheap even when used.

Backspacing is built into the wheel. It is the measurment on the inside of the wheel from the mounting flange where the holes are for the wheel studs to the lip of the rim. You can lay a straight edge against the top of the wheel and measure to the mounting flange. That should get you a pretty close backspacing measurment.

 

got some wheels guys, got a call while in Wilmington. was on the way home and turned around guy met me with a set of 3rd gen limiteds.

 

i was searching for info about wheel sizes and tire sizes and i landed here.
1992 4x4 truck....31x10.5-15 (2 sets) 1 set on 15x8 American racing type 8's and the other lug set on 15x8 american racing black appliance type rims(steel=rusted junk)....my question is this, my son's 88 4runner has 31x10.5-15's on original 15x7 sr5 rims. i know on the 4runner the fenders / quarters seem to have a acomodating built in flaring to them to provide coverage which my 92 does not have....hence the concern. i got pulled over in my 92(1st time in 18 years of driving it like this) because the tires protruded more than 2 inches beyond the body....the 88 4runner are definitely tucked in. does that 1'' wheel width make that much of a difference?? easily i could swap the wheels and see if it still sticks out, but being this 4runner is new to us, i can't muster the strength to get the welded on (feels like it) lugs off to switch them. i did however have to put my original (yes, original 18 year old / look like brand new) tires and wheels back on. i painted them black 2 days ago to reduce the embarrasment a little. the wheels are 15x7......the question is, what size tires are anybody running on 15x7 rims.......as per what i see on my son's truck, 31x10.5x15 ought to work......i am also curious about the 33x9.5x15's i've seen as well.....

The first gen and secend gen runners use the same rims, you can swap no problem. It is not the width of your rims that is the problem but the offset. So the 7" rims will work just fine.

The 7" rims will run 31x10.5s or 33x10.5s but will not take anything wider. The 8'' rims will take 12.5s without a problem.

 

thanks. i'm curious what the difference will make (will i be legal) if i put the 31x10.5-15's on the 15x7 rims versus the 15x8 rims they are on, that's why for a test i'm going to swap w/ my son's 4runner with that setup to see if they are 1'' not as wide. my stock wheels look great since they were hardly ever used them and i painted them black.

is anybody running the 33x9.5-15's?? i was wondering how stable they were. seems like there would be alot of roll to them with such a high and skinny profile, so it's a stability concern i would have with them.

 

I think there are a couple people on here running a 33X9.50 but they are alot harder to find than the 33X10.50

 

I run both the 33x10.50s and 33.9.50s on 15x6 rims. I like the 10.50 a lot better. The 9.50s like to roll over on side hills a little more than I like:
