I'm looking out my window at bare grass and pavement right now here in Eastern Canada. However, the temp this week has been between 20-40 degrees. But last week was warm enough for my wife to wear sandals. That's different than most decembers up here.

Chains are almost a thing of the past with tire technology these days. Is it even leagal to use chains on paved roads?

I think it depends on the state. I know in Utah, we can drive with studded tires and chains. But certain states won't even allow studded tires on the road. Check with you local state.

BTW, chains are VERY effective, even compared against studded snow tires. However, on my FWD car I had a while back, studded snows got me out of most of the hairy situations. But, there were a couple of times where I got stuck, and chains/cables would've definately got me out.

For the first time in remembered history her ein Denver they had a chain law in effect for commercial trucks and large trucks on the free-ways IN Denver. (It is normal to have a chain law over the passes, but IN Denver???)

We got lots of snow!

I want a set of chains for 2 reasons...

1. For emergency situations, like when we get hit by snow and NO one knows how to drive in it. I'd like to be able to drive around and pull people out of ditches.

2. For snow wheelin! There are a lot of mountain roads here that are just scenic in the summer, but in the winter and covered in 2-3' of snow they could be awesome for snow wheelin'.

Not only legal, but required under certain conditions, at least in CA:
http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/chcontrl.htm

Was only in R3 conditions once, usually they shut down the road if it gets past R2.

I was having some windshield work done on my Subaru today and walked across the street to the Checkers Auto store and was asking the guy about chains. For large size tires they need to be ordered from the manufacture basically. So, I'd give checkers a call. I learned to ski in PA at Hidden Valley and Seven Springs. Also, saw my 1st dead shows in Philly. Man its been a few moons since I've been there, make sure you eat some tastykakes.

Wow, small world.

I didn't see the Dead in Philly, but I did see them in 3 Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, Blossum in Cleveland, ? in Washington DC, Soldier Field in Chicago, Madion SQ Gardens in NYC, Deer Lakes in Indiana...not sure where else.

The truck is fixed and I found some snow. At 10 PSI and double locked I can make it through 2"+ and stay on top of about 1". I am just curious how deep I can get through with chains on all 4.

I'm not sure but I do know that the guy that owns SLC in Rio Rancho just got a set of 37's for like 150 bucks or so. He had to order them custom though. If you want I can try to find out where he got them from. I'm gotta go drop off some more cleaner for my housings, damn after 20+ years those things were dirty.

I've called and searched for chains for the last month, all over Colorado and New Mexico (while traveling). My cables are due to arrive tomorrow, just in time for our next icing from Old Man Winter here in Colorado Springs. I used eBay and got a good deal. Even for the 14 lb shipment it was around $70. And, the cables that I bought don't need a tensioner. The tensioners are additional $$$. When I called around locally for chains for my 31x10.5's, I was told that the entire state was sold out of my size. This winter has been tough and our storm arriving tonight is supposed to be colder than what we've seen yet, ouch!

So, can you chain up all four tires? Do you need to chain all four? I had heard stuff on this. 4Crawler shows a pic of his chains and he uses two, so that's gotta be fine for me-he rocks. I chose cables because the $$$money that I saved on a tensioner and the fact that the cables said that they're recommended for Highway Use. And, that's where I want to use them is on the highways driving to ski resorts this winter. Stay Cool, er warm

You can chain up all 4 if needed. I would first try your chains on the front tires in the driveway first. Make sure to spin the wheels and turn them lock-lock to make sure they clear. Sometimes IFS trucks can have pretty limited clearance up front. I do have 2 sets of cables, got a set from a guy whose truck was totalled. Never chained up all 4 and have only chained up the rear end one time. I find unless it is very icy, that just airing down works fine.

Do you have Les Schwab stores? That's where my chains were purchased. They will buy them back in the Spring if you don't use 'em. Mine are still in great shape after 4 years. They had them for bigger size tires too.
