Road Noise: KM2 vs Dur-Trac vs MTR

found a nail today! it was free! all i had to do was run it over!

so, i'll be getting myself some new shoes for krismus. question is: which one of the following has the least road noise? i'm looking for good treadwear and low road noise out of a good off-road tire.

I would get the duratrack. I have them on my LC that I use to take Skiing. Best road manners for a MT/AT hybrid.

I have no experience with the other two, however I do have the Hankook MT's on my truck and they are quite quiet. Good traction on everything except hard pack snow and ice.

the things i've read about them is the thin sidewall and instability at higher speeds, but the tread is phenomenal.

thanks for the input. it's not like any of these tires are the worst... they're the top 3 that i've decided on

I get less road noise on my MTR's than I did out of my old KM1's. And I've heard the km2's are louder.
Tread life with the MTR's seems pretty good. I've got 25k on mine and still more than half tread left.

I agree with scuba, My 33x12.50 MTR's are amazingly quiet on the road/highway. They handle well at all speeds (within reason). And like scuba states, the treadwear is good to go.

good points, thanks guys. keep 'em coming!

thought i'd share the "studded" tire...

(don't get long trail t/a, by the way. they pick up stuff like crazy, it was only a matter of time before it was a nail)

I have the dura tracks on my 94 pickup and they are really quite, seem to be wearing well, and handle well.

I have KM2's on my runner, have only had the runner out of the garage for about five miles, but notice they are substantially noisier than the dura tracks.

Dura tracks are way cheaper too.

Hope it helps

I had 32x11.50x15 "Stampede?" brand all terrains on alloy 15x10 wheels on my 84 pickup when I got it. They were noisy. Slightly cupped from lack of rotation, but not terrible. I just put on 33x10.50.15 BFG KM2s on 15x7 steelies, and they are great. A slight noise doing 80mph on interstate, but I hear more truck/wind/road noise than anything. I just did a 1500 mile run last week, and they still had a little nipple from the rubber whiskers on them.

I also have KM2s on my 97 Z71, 315x75x16. 30K miles on them and still over half life left. And when I run 80 on the Interstates in that truck, you cant hear the tires. Only wind/road noise.

My vote is KM2s....

As you know Ian, I LOVE my KM2's.

Great tire, not too noisy (can't compare with the other tires as i've never ran those), but the traction is fantastic not to mention they can take a lickin and keep on kickin (er in this case, rollin).

KM2 is my vote!

P.S. I was actually thinking about selling mine for a set of 33x10.5 KM2's

brian- if you are buying new shoes, and your current km2's don't have too much wear, i'll think about buying 'em

in the meantime, thanks for all the comments, guys. clutch is next, then tires

Yeah i'd like to go 33x10.5's The reason for not bumping up to 33x10.5's originally was because 33's used to rub on the valance, now i have the ARB so they won't rub.

Ian, my tires have about 3K on em.

KM2's definitely arn't known for their quietness. MKtaco is right, they do get louder over time. Mine have just reached complete baldness, and they are louder than they have ever been. Good tires though, I'll be replacing them with a fresh set of KM2's.

For quietness and a good combination of road manners and offroad traction you would be hard pressed to beat the duratracs. For one of the best tires out there for the money i love my mtrs in the 33" flavor. I have run super swamper ltb's, maxxis bighorns, mtr's, bfgoodrich at's, and bfgoodrich km1's. so far my above and beyond favorite off road and on is still the mtr with kevlar.
