ProComp A/T rant

I have been dealing with the tough tire decision lately. I do not need tires too soon, however who doesn't anticipate the next set of tires way before it is necessary?

It has been between ProComp M/T, BFG A/T, BFG M/T, or maybe Mickey Thompson A/T.

I am currently using ProComp A/T's in the 33 x 12.5 x 15 size. I was really headed toward a different tire until just the last few days. They proved to perfrom under par for me in the mud. My 4 wheel drive wasn't working at the time that I really put them to the test so that may be part of the mud problem (have since remedied the problem). I have since changed my mind. I have been skiing at Beach and Sugar Mountain for the past few days. On Tuesday, that area received about 6" of snow, maybe more. The ProComps didn't miss a step. I couldn't get it to fishtail in 4 wheel hi, and barely in 2 wheel. We would have been stuck in the Chalet otherwise. The tires were awsome and I will be purchasing another set unless the slim chance that I find something better. As for the mud, I will get a locker.

By the way, 20mpg on the trip back, don't know that I could have done that with a mudder. (manual, 3.0., 4" lift, 4.56's, 33x12.5 A/T)

...rant ended.

Bfg

I had the BFG A/T on my '73 Bronco and they were better in the mud than the ProComps, but only marginally. I did have some problems on the ice compared to the ProComps. I do like the BFG's.

That green diamond tire looks pretty cool too.

Going to need tires for my work truck (Tahoe) and the 4runner will be hitting this place up for both. And when the time comes in the spring tires for the 83 also.

Pop's is a trucker for a steel company doesnt really have much problem with retreads as far as i know. Besides aren't all tires essentially a retread, dont they do the side Wall body and CAP what ever tread is needed.

I think i will ask my cousin he works for Firestone making tires he would know.

I have a set of M/T's from them on my '78 F150 and you can't beat the price, but with that said if you are going to use them for wheeling don't air them down. The tread will start to come off if they have too much sidewall flex. But on a positive note they are pretty good for pavement pounding

I know what you mean, Ohio has 2 wheeling seasons, snow and mud. Mud tires suck in snow ans snow tires suck in mud.

the bfg a/t sucks in mud, but good in snow, so sounds like you should stick with what you know. i switched from bfg a/t to cooper st-c because of them sucking in mud

I'm runnin 31x10.5 Pro Comp ATs on my '88 and they perform fine for what I do in the mud. In 4hi or lo I can get them to do just about anything I need to do with minimal slipping. I have hardly any complaints, and if I had a locker they'd be the perfect tire for me.

They're decent in the mud if you've got the power to clear them, which is generally true of any mud tire.

I like 'em in the snow also - I just got back from a trip that took me through Kansas during that statewide snow/ice/whatever disaster and a ground blizzard in southern Colorado... Good tires.. Not cheap though.

i was talking about the bfg A/T KO, not the mud. the a drag slick has the same traction in mud at the a/t does.

the bfg a/t is exactly that all-terrain, but mud over 10" deep or clay they load up too quick and don't unload, at least in my experiance. but they do very well in snow, sand, and have great treadwear

Gotta REALLY air down AT's in the mud. The tread flexing will help them clear.
