Procomp steel wheels seem out of round
Hey all,
Just mounted 4 of the 5 procomp wheels I ordered last week, series 87 rockcrawlers. While balancing 2 of them you could see radial runout in the wheels while they were spinning on the balancer. On one wheels I had to put 3.5 ounces on the inside and on the other 3.5 ounces on the outside.
I don't notice any vibration from it at highway speeds, but the visual runout and amount of weight has me concerned.
Should I try to exchange the out of round wheels or am I being too picky since they are just steel wheels.
I want to go to hollister today and try them out, but not if I'm going to exchange them. Help me decide what to do.
Thanks

Yeah, you're probably right.
What can I say, my dad was a machinist, so perfectionism was bread into me from the start.
I was just concerned that the out of roundness might cause my tires to wear unevenly, but if there's no vibration, then that shouldn't be a factor right?

I went down to the shop yesterday and felt some vibration at freeway speeds on the way in. When I got there I racked up the runner and put in 4wd to spin all 4 wheels. What I found was that they looked out of round if you looked at the stamped out center portion of them, but on closer inspection of the tire and outer bead portion of the rim they seemed fine. I noticed that the yellow dot, which I had lined up with the valve stems had now moved about 12 inches on the rim, counter clockwise on the drive wheels and clockwise on the front/braking wheels; there's the source of my vibration.
When I originally balanced the wheels I used a special plate with lug adaptors. This time I just put the centering cone on the outside of the wheel and cinched them up. One of the wheels took alot less weight, the others were about the same.
No vibration when I got done. I took another look at he dot location when I got home and they havent moved again. Since we didnt have any tire grease, I used silicone spray on the beads while I was mounting the tires, guess it took a day or so to dry out.
All's good now, won't make it to Hollister this weekend, but am trying to plan a trip to Clear Lake next weekend, so I might spend a day up on Cow Mountain.

what kind and size tire do you have? any kind of offroad tire will require more weight then a street tire to balance out. i wouldn't worry about it too much. load force them and do a rim runout. the machine will tell you if they're alright. if you have access to a balancer, check he balance every oil change, or whenever you go to rotate your tires.
