Are you guys kidding me?..the only reasons for getting rid of any tire is (A)Recall (B)Worn out (C)Dry rot or (D)Any other obvious deformity due to neglect or laziness.

I thought this subject was covered a while ago on a thread here since I knew about this years ago but it's good to be reminded for those who didn't know. Remeber to check your spares too since I've never had to use my spare that was under my truck for the last 5+ years but it's been repleced since.

yea i work for americas tire/discount tire and putting on older spares. like most of our original spares is definately not safe at all.. those things are ancient and they most likely are starting to crack... so find a store with a size that you can use on the spare rim... thats what i just did.

That ignorance is why they had to do a 60 minutes thing on it in the first place. Rubber dries out over time, creating a metaphorical time bomb. Also, you have to realize it's not all about your safety. They people working on your tires are in danger if they are working on a tire that old, as it can explode from being inflated to a standard pressure. Seen it myself.

What store? I worked at CAN 29 (I think) (Rancho Cordova) and CAN 30 (Folsom), but I moved back to Co and now work at a store here.

Hayes, thats what tire inspection and care is for.If you think people are going to start throwing away tires that are in good shape because of an expiration date on the tire, you are wrong. There is no scientific evidence to support throwing out tires as if its a gallon of expired milk.Even if you have to take the tire off the rim, then you can determine if it needs to be tossed.

The majority of tire shops will not touch a tire when it hits 10 years old, Discount Tire has that as a corporate rule, you can not, under any circumstances work on a tire with a DOT 10 years or older. People can do whatever they want, but companies have to look out for employee and consumer safety.

Ok,I just watched the video and I retract some of my previous comments. There should be expiration dates on tires and or tire manufacturers should,by law, rotate inventory.I just went out and looked at the inside of my tires and seen the code 2305,meaning 23rd week of 2005.Mine should get me through until next year.I didnt realize how widespread the sale of old tires is.Im used to seeing people drive with maypops (bald tires)and always tell them how stupid it is to drive on tires with no tread. Now after seeing all the rolled SUVs,it is evident that there is and has been a problem for many years.

Er.. well, I wouldn't pin every SUV rollover on expired tires. The SUV boom of late exposed a wide variety of problems.
