I have BFG AT KO's on both 4Runners. I have had BFG Long Trails on the '95 but suffered one blowout due to throwing a tread. Naturally, I don't recommend LT's. Seems like I remember an article in Consumer Reports or somewhere saying that BFG AT's start out good in the rain and as they wear down, they do worse. I bought them anyway. They've done well in snow, southwest rainstorms (so far), but the treads fill up with mud so I wouldn't recommend them for mudders. Good all around tires. Ride rougher and are noiser on the highway than the LT's. I'll probably buy another set unless someone discovers a better tire for what I need.

I bought my Long Trails about 45K miles ago, and they still have loads of tread left. I decided to try them because Consumer Reports gave them such a glowing review and at the time I was not off road much. They are excellent in the rain, and quieter than most, so they were a good decision at the time. I would buy them again, but I hope to do more off-roading in the future so I may give up the smooth, quiet ride in order to gain some off-roading capabilities. As for mud, I try to avoid it whenever possible (I end up spending more time cleaning up than I did having fun!), and only mudders are good in mud. That being said, mud is what we have plenty of in this area. I may try the BFG AT's this year.

What do people recommend for allround rain/snow/dirtroads (besides revos), I only occassionally go really offroad.
I have Michelin LTX A/T's on mine. They are very smooth for on-road driving and have great wet traction. I do wish they had a little more aggressive tread, but I guess you can't have it all.. I have 45,000 miles on my tires and still lots of tread left.

I had BFG Radial All Terrain TA (pre-ko's) on my 94 Ranger. They were ok off road, but they sucked in the rain. I couldn't keep that back end from slipping. I replaced them with 32" Dueler M/T's and loved them. I would have put them on my 4Runner, when I traded the Ranger, but they were only 15" rims.

The BFG A/T ko's are great in the snow. I live in Boulder and go up in the mountains a lot in the winter to snowboard; they work great up there. In fact, I've tried to spin out in 4wd and it's really hard...they just grab. I would think that the tread design on the Mudders wouldn't do so well on snow (not enough siping and bite). And, the A/T's look awesome on 4runners. Good luck.

Ive had my AT ko's for about 6k and theyve performed excellent in the rain, except one hydro incident that was probably becuase i hit the gas too hard. Personally I think they suck in the mud, the treads get filled with mud and it wont come out unless you go really fast. Ive yet to experience them in snow, but hoping they do good or else my 2wd but wont be going anywhere. Hopefully the snow chains will help.

Make sure you watch the sidewalls for very small tears that look quarter inch cuts. Before mine threw the tread, I took it in to Sam's and they saw the small cut in the sidewall and told me not to worry about it. A couple weeks later I passed a guy on the freeway doing 70 mph and the front end started ticking, then thumping, then REALLY THUMPING. I managed to get over quick. Same dogone tire I warned SAM's about. Got it replaced with the mileage adjustment with a pair of AT's. Next year, similar cut on another LT. I took them in to SAM's and had 'em take the darn things off. They adjusted them and I got the second pair of AT's.

Glad I wasn't driving a Ford.

Did you go with BFG A/Ts?
Did you experience any power loss at 265/75/16?
Enjoy the new shoes

One of many reasons to be glad you aren't driving a Ford.
Thanks for the tip -- I'll keep an eye on my sidewalls.

so far so good. IT RAINED ALL FRICKEN WEEKEND between san diego and SGV area. stil raining in sgv. I went semi-mudding in san diego next to my house. lots of slippery mud. the tires did ok i thought.

one thing is that the 265-75's rub when i turn to extreme left or right. its just a little bit though. it should fix itself when the tire wears some.

in the rain there hasnt been any problems. unless of course i hit a good size puddle going 40-50 then there is a bit or floating, as i would expect with any tire. so far so good.

I will watch for the little tears. and if it happens sams club will be taking care of it. hehe

now all i need is a 2 " lift from the tundra and i am golden showers!

THANKS

BFG ATs are good good, I also live in Washington but never really had issues with them. Good in snow, rain, etc. Only thing bad about it that the tread pattern, especially the treads on the side wear out kinda quick and loses its sharpness(I'm sure all you AT KO owners are familiar with this). I've also heard after about half way through the tread life it starts to lose performance quick.

Another vote for Revos

THX

I have had my Revos for a while now, for an AT tire they are the best I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned a lot over the last few years! The BFGs are a great tire, but are not good in rain, and I didn’t really have much luck in the slush with them. My Revos run smooth, very very quiet and have very good snow, rain and general all terrain traction. And at Costco they were under $150 each mounted, balanced, old Destination MTs disposed of with a life time balance and rotation all included. I will buy them again, I have about 15,000 miles on mine and they look new! The Destination MTs were a GREAT tire, but didn’t hold up for on road use very well, I got about 30,000 out of them and they were the cause of a REJECTED inspection sticker. That said, I vote Revo! OH my dad has an 02 Taco with new Bilsteins and a new set of Revos, he loves the set up, he had the stock TRD Bils. and BFG Rugged Trail tires for the first 40,000 and thought that set up was sweet till I talked him into letting me upgrade his rig for him! The rear stock Bils were dead, totally dead, there was a little life left at the bottom of the stroke but the mid section where they ride unloaded was totally dead! I was very shocked to see this! I have a set of Bil. HDs on my Miata and it rides even more like a go cart, I love it! REVO!

This is when my problems started. In the begining I thought they were great tires.

the m/t's don't do well in the wet or on snow untill there are air'd down. total lack of siping makes them scary on ice [or really fun depending on your taste!] i think i'd go with some 33x9.5's for all year/snow driving. i like the narrow tread in the snow. i run 31x10.5 txr's on the street and 33x12.5 bfg m/t the rest of the time

Great an expensive gocart!

I have had some hydroplaning with my worn Kelly pathfinder tires (came with the runner when I bought it used) so better wettraction from the Revos would be great.
Time to shop for tires.

That's been my experience. I'm on my second set of BFG AT's and love 'em. They're great in the rain at first but after about 45k they start to harden up (as is to be expected) and they don't do so good no more... They were a 100% improvement over the goodyear Wrangler RT/S's that were on my 4runner when I got it. All in all

Steve, They're probably rubbing on the wheel well liner. I have 32x11.5's (nearly the same size as yours) and that's where they rub for me. I cut some of the plastic away and tried a lower profile screw, instead of the hex head that was in it. Doesn't rub as much, but does if that side compresses at full tilt. The best solution is a 1" or higher body or suspension lift, of course that applies only after you've resigned yourself to the notion that one improvement inevitably leads to another.

PS. from everything i've read the rubbing you're getting isn't really doing anything bad to the tires, it's just load and scares you a bit a first.
