BFG All Terrain on a 3rd Gen 4runner: Load range?
been looking at tires and decided to go with the Bfgs. went to order from tirerack.com cause their 140 a tire for lt265/75/16s load range E. and it came up with this warning....
The following tire you have selected has a higher load rating than the vehicle's Original Equipment (O.E.) tires. This typically results in increased ride harshness, which some customers may find undesirable.
Anyone that drives a 4runner have any problems with this tire?

I initially had a load range E BFG AT KO tire installed on my 4runner, and it did produce a moderatly harsher ride. I went back to Discount tire and they swapped them for load range C tires, the ride was improved, but the change wasn't super dramatic. I would stick with load range C tire, unless you're towing heavy stuff, or need the extra sidewall stiffness for off-roading. The C's should also be cheaper.

load range E will have a higher ply rating, meaning the sidewall is more stout, which means less give. Range E is overkill for your ride, i'd go with a D if they offer it, or a C if thats all they have.

currently running 265/75r16 cooper mt with load range e. the recommended psi is 80 and i run them at 65 (for highway driving). still way to high and the ride leaves a little to be desired. i will definatly be looking for a lower load range tire for the next set.

I've been looking for the ATs in this size too and from their specs sheet they only offer that size in an E rating. 2 different sidewall types though. What are we to do?

E is for vehicles weighing over 5000lbs and our 3rd gens are 1000 less than that and yes E is harsh which is why I went back to the tire place and got my TGs in the D load range. Some people like that hard ride and will tell you it's no big deal but if you put alot of miles on the street it'll be nocticeable plus you pay more for E which is dumb if you can get C or D for cheaper.

Um, I drive 100+ miles per day and have no problems with my E rated tires. Plus, mine didn't cost any more. I'm in my 30's and I'm done with the loud exhaust, harsh suspension days, but I have zero complaints on the ride quality on these BFG's. Next set I get will be MT's also in load range E.

You're in the minority and don't mind the stiff ride and most E rated tires do cost more to the rest of us. (Nittos Es are over $20 more a tire at Discount) Have you driven on D or C rated BFGs to compare with?
I've driven a 4Runner shod with each within a few days and when I was downtown on our constuction zoned/potholed streets there was a noticeable diff. If I don't need Es then why would I buy them since on a 4000lb truck I don't see the advantage unless you tow.

i have 285/75/r16 bfg with a load range e on my 4runner, and they are completely fine. the stiffer sidewall is a good thing if you offroad, less chance of a sidewall puncture, i don't even know what the max psi is on my tires but i run the fronts around 28 psi and the back around 24. the lower pressure compensates for the stiffer tire.
and if you were to run the at the max they woud be overinflated for the weight and would wear irregular.

My previous set right before this was BFG D's. Honestly, I can't tell that much difference. It is NOT harsh at all. Reasons I like LRE is because of the tougher sidewalls and better stability, especially when towing.

I have 17 inch rims with 265/70/r17's (same outer diameter as the 265/75/r16), so I had the option of going with a C rated tire.
Don't quote me on this, but I read somewhere that the E rated tires have a heavier rolling mass and affected gas milage, however when I switched from E's to C's I didn't notice a difference.

Short Time Lurker, first time poster. This discussion prompted me to post my findings. I too am looking for a BFG AT 265/75/16. I just got back from Discount Tires and discussed this issue with a guy there. BFG does have a D rated tire, but it is a special order, and is going to take about 5 days to get wherever cause they do not make too many of them. They are more expensive, but might be the answer to some of you out there that thinks a E rated tire is overkill.

Great tire off road but BFGs left a bit to be desired with their wet weather performance and their dry grip wasn't as good as my Nitto TGs. Simply a so-so tire in my experiences on them especially on a '97 4Runner I drove and on my GF's '94 Toy PU plus they are pricey.
