best street-performing 30s
What 30 inch tires that will fit 16X8" rims, will perform the best on the road? how wide? what weel/tire combo would provide the best street handling performance?

According to Tire Rack, there were two sizes available for your 88. If it was my truck, I would look at size 205/70-14 and look at the BFG Radial TA. I had a set of these years ago on my Tacoma 2wd and they were great tires.

He shouldnt have 14" rims on his 4x4..
First, you need to find out what size rims you currently have, then decide if you want stock size (235/75-15), or if you want to go up to a 30" tire, or a 31" tire..
I have 30x9.5r15 Cooper Discoverer ST's on my truck, and they perform well both onroad and offroad, with great on-road manners and minimal highway noise.
Pretty good treadwear life too, i'm at 40k right now with about 1/4 tread left.
However, you can get a MUCH higher variety of tires in 31x10.5... And, your truck will probably look better. I know when i get new tires i'm going 31x10.5's, or 33x10.5s

The OP actually didn't specify and I guess I saw "street performance" and assumed it was a 2wd.
If it is indeed a 4wd and stock and you don't off-road, I would go with 235/75-15. This will keep the engine from laboring with larger tires and keep your fuel mileage decent. I would recommend a set of Falken High Country AT's. I have them on my truck and they are great on the street, in the rain and snow and off-road.
