91 Truck one rear wheel locked up...

Truck is 91 V6 4x4
Went to get our old beat up 91 truck out to get some lumber...before we got it out of the driveway the wheel locked up...We thought we hit something. Got out looked around...nothing. Figuring it was a fluke...

We put it in reverse and it went for 5-6 feet before clunk and stop...put it in drive went 5-6 feet then clunk stop.

Figuring what could it hurt on this old beast I gave it gas to try to force it to move. the passenger side wheel turned but the driver side wheel stayed locked and tore up a piece of my yard ..,

at that point i changed it to reverse again and it wouldn't move at all.

Any ideas?

PS I am so glad I found these forums I am a long time toyota fan and absolutely love my ugly truck...as well as my 01 corolla.

Thanks!

Brakes froze or wheel bearings.

Hey oldpickupguy! I realize this is from way back, but I'm just reading it now. Did you ever get the "wheel locking" thing figured out? Just wondering 'cause I'm having the same issue with my '89. It doesn't do it all the time, but very often. As I'm rolling to a stop, the drivers side rear wheel will lock up solid. Like it will skid on pavement! And, like you said, it feels like you've been hit. Anyway, just curious. Thanx.

Turned out the brake pads were completely destroyed...and pieces were getting lodged between what was left of the pads and the drum.

The guy said he could not see how I managed to drive it at all.

At first they said it was the master cylinder and that the truck was basically junked...I asked them to take a closer look lol.

Yeah, I was hoping that wasn't the case. I've had mine apart numerous times. I bought this truck from a buddy 2 years ago with 67000 miles on it (22yrs old, that's about 3000 miles/year), and I now have about 85000. This thing has never been off road and is in amazing condition. The brakes, drums, etc. are all like brand new. the thing that's really weird though, is that it will go away. Last spring/summer it didn't do it for probably 6 months, then it comes back. It's doing it now just about every stop. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get 'er figured out. Thanx for your help. Nev.
