89 4runner wheel help
I have searched but haven't heard anything conclusive on what wheel options i have. Its a stock 89 4runner with ifs. Current aluminum wheels are getting replaced due to a bad wheel. I want the cheap black steel wheels and will order them but want to make sure they are going to fit. Current wheels are 15x8 but not sure of the backspacing. I want to go up to 16"or 17" due to tire selection in my area. And i will run the cheapest Chinese tires i can find. My question is, which is better 16" or 17", 7" wide or 8", and most importantly, what backspacing is necessary for fit without scrubbing a mid size tire?

You'll need a 3.75" backspacing for an 8" wide rim. After a quick search, I didn't see any 16" or 17" x 8" rims with the correct center bore, bolt pattern, and backspacing. I know they're out there, but I'm in class now and I don't have much time for searching
You want a bolt pattern of 6"x5.5" and a center bore of 106mm (I think).
And why the cheapest Chinese tires? That doesn't sound like a good idea. Tires are one of those things that you get what you pay for.
EDIT: What size tires do you have now and what size are you looking to buy?

Hey guys. Thanks for responses.

The above is one wheel I looked at but it has 4" backspacing. Not sure if that would make it not work. When I search these websites for my vehicle it only gives OEM size options (15x8). I don't mind 15x8 but around here tire selection is basically limited to 31x10.5. And they often carry one brand and cost more than many options for a 16" wheel.
I would not want to change wheels just to change looks and for more tire options, but since I have to buy new wheels I would like to set myself up with more options in the future since 15" seems to be going away. Also, if I have my choice I'd like to narrow up a little bit and go with 7" and maybe 265x75?
The reason for going with cheap chinese tires is that I have had them along with many mid-high tier tires and this thing has eaten them all as a snack so I figure I'll start cheap and if they last I'll invest in some better ones.
I'm really up for any advice or opinions but budget is definitely a key factor and would also like plenty of tire options.
Thanks

why not just look for a set of takeoffs from a newer Toyota? you'll get wheels that fit, slight weight savings with alloys, all are 16"+, non-chinese tires usually come on them, usually good price.
if you're thinking about cheap chinese mud tires, like those GT Radials...lots of people in my area have them on their cars because they're dirt cheap...but i've seen they chunk out pretty bad and wear fairly fast. why are tires not lasting long on your rig? welded rear diff?

I have been checking local craigslist for newer takeoffs but haven't found anything any cheaper than new steels. If it is somewhat cheaper it is usually a 3 hour drive so that would about kill any savings. Still looking but even then I didn't know if 17s from a 2007 runner would fit mine. So there was risk in purchasing something like that without knowing.
As far as why my tires wear fast it is probably because my drivetrain has 325k miles on it and is probably loose as a goose. A wheel that is out of round doesn't help things. Shimmys and shakes all over the place at certain speeds. I plan on putting a new idler arm and getting a new alignment when I get the tires.
