Lower RPM's don't necessarily mean better MPG's, especially in a aero-challenged brick like the 4Runner. Also, a taller tire means more rotational mass, which equals LESS MPG's. If your theory were correct, then everyone with 35's would be getting the best mileage.

 

Ended up getting the P265 75 16 Revos. I have only used 2 tanks full but have diffentaly noticed a drop in mpg. I will have to give it more time to tell how much diff. The biggest change was the ride. The bumps in the road are much more pronouced than with the stock dunlops (72,000 miles). That was one of the reasons with going with the Revos over the Nittos. Hope we get some snow here so I can try them out.

 

One reason for the harsher ride may be because of air pressure. When I got my Yokohama's put on, the guys filled the tires to 60psi, the max for this tire. When I lowered it to a more reasonable 35psi, the ride improved greatly. You may have already checked for that, but it's a thought. My Revos were very comfortable.

 

I bought a used set of Nitto TGs in 265/75/17 load D (had approx 3k on the tires). Coming from a set of P265/70/16 Michelins, I wanted a more beefier tire, but wasn't sure what to expect MPG-wise. Well, it's been several months now and I'd say I'm loosing about 1 MPG, give-or-take; and I can def 'feel' the heavier Nittos. Speedo is dead-on though, as was mentioned earlier. Road noise is more pronounced over the Michelins (probably due to them being used), but the ride is excellent. I was really concerned about the stiffer sidewalls, but they ride really well. Overall, I'm happy w/the purchase, especially at the deal I got on 'em. But will look for a lighter 265/75 tire next go 'round.

 

sorry to bring up an old post, but i am running 265/70s, i wanna know how it would look with 265/75s on the truck. i have a 1999 4runner with no lift

might be clearance issue if you are 99 short springs and run front mudflaps. If you have the tall 99 springs you will likely be fine.

the color codes will reveal which springs you have

 

I just switched to 265/75-16 Yokohama AT-S. I do notice a little power loss, not bad. No rubbing so far, even when wheeling. I'm happy with the size. Glad I didn't go bigger.

I do have 3+" of lift but that wouldn't matter when stuffing tires.
