I recently purchased a product that was new to me. The name of the company is ShadyBoy. The make awnings for VW vans. I have a Hannibal Roof Tent and know they make awnings but they start aourn$700?ish OUCH. SO I happened to be looking on Ebay and found this awning. Its simple, light, and cost effective at $385 shipped. I got it in the mail looked it over and damn what a nice product. I did however have to modify the brackets it came with, which of course was no problem. Then I modify the Yakima rack to work with the awning and it was done. I am extremely impressed and look forward to testing this out in upcoming weeks. It also has poles for windy conditions and tethered lines.

Collapsed and slid all the way in, now keep in mind when my roof tent is on this unit will be slid almost all the way out. The unit measures 49" and change long and not very wide.



I sunk carriage bolts same as the yakima bolts 5/16 x 2 1/2 into the supplied brackets. Also a not on the brackets they were J shaped to start and I bent them into somewhat of a 90 Degree.

This one shows the mounts backwards so that I could put the awning up by hand and mark it for drilling

marked for drilling and I only use the top to marks because I figured 3 per end were overkill taking into consideration the weight of the unit.

How long does it take to deploy/stow?

 

As I am one who is all knowing ,, well until I dont know then I RTFM "read the freakin manual" It took about 2 min or less to set up. And 4 min to stow though again thinking I wouldnt need the instruction for stowage. Mind you this is only the basic part of the tent and does not include attaching the guy lines or optional poles that run from the corners to the ground. So all in all it takes about the same amount if time to take down as my Hannibal tent takes to set up and take down 4 min-ish.

sorry to bring up an old thread, but i was wondering if you have any more reviews on the awning after owning and using it for a year and a half. im lookin at getting one my self.

Greeeeat especially for the price. The fiber glass poles are still good and not splintering, the case is tough as it has fallen off the shelf in the garage a couple times. I say for the money it was a great buy @ 1/2 the cost of the comparable units I say go for it.

That is almost like the Hannibal one, self standing.

 

Well self standing until a good gust blows along. It comes with fiberglass poles and guy lines that I strongly recommend. But when it comes to cost I think it was $275 or $325 which is a fraction of what the big boys are and nowere near as heavy. But with other overlanding equipment it comes with pros and cons and might not be suitable for everyone but it fits my bill just fine. I moved some stuff around on photobucket so the original links were broken.
