I decided to build a foldable fire ring to take anywhere I want to go camping since searching for rocks in the desert is both time consuming and alters the land itself. Plus I think it's a good thing to have on hand in case of being stranded out and away. This one is a prototype that I have used a few times with good results (and it fits in a backpack!). Working on a few more to make minor design changes.

 

That's pretty sick... What's it made out of?

 

16ga sheet metal. Light enough to carry, and strong enough to get banged around.

 

I take it you just cut it in sections, hinged em together and latched one side so it can be folded up?

I can't find a pic now to post.
But I saw one where someone made a metal cover with holes and such that fit over the spare tire on the back of a LandCruiser. 35" spare tire, and since the bottom was wide metal mesh you could still see the license plate mounted on the spare.
I have googled all the interwebs and I cannot find a pic.

you idea is pretty cool, I like the idea of picing up a dirty fire ring and leaving it outside the rig.

This is the reason I love 4WD Toyota Owner magazine, so I snapped a few shots of the pictorial. It's a bit more mesh like then I remember, but I think it's an idea that could be improved on.

it's a grill that goes over the fire for cooking. pretty cool.

 

Yep it's a grill, I thought I read it was a fire ring. This gave me the idea to build a ring the fits over the spare, and the grill as shown. Two separate pieces. I like the he foldable ring the OP made. Just wanted to post up a concept that I hadn't seen before.
