Question Getting Ready for a chevy 350 swap

hey, ive posted before with questions such as should i go into SAS right away or not, and after alot of thinking ive decided that i am going to build up and make the best ifs rig possible for now, and then later on most likely do a SAS, but right now i have some money and im talking to a guy about putting a chevy 350 engine in my 1988 Toyota 4runner, and i just had a couple of questions for anyone who has done this or who knows anything about it,...

1st, has anyone had any serious problems with it or has the power been too much and broken stuff?

2nd, should i upgrade to a different transmission, because alot of people who have done this seem to have a turbo 350 transmission, and is that absolutely necessary?

3rd, what else should i consider upgrading at this point to be better prepared for the swap?

any and all help would be greatly appreciated, and thanx

it all depends on how heavy your foot is. if you have a lead foot, your gonna need a 350 tranny and rear end(or maybe just much higher gears). but ive heard of people bolting the 350 to the stock 5 speed and being ok. my buddy did that in sd b4 he got rid of her, ran it for about a year.

when you say gearing do you mean like, im going to need a whole new back axle? or what kind of gearing would be preferred, im only running 33 12.50s at the moment but i will eventually move up to 35`s or beyond, and would i be able to "give it hell" on the gas pedal with a turbo 350 tranny? i wanna be able to MOB ya know? and not worry (for the most part) about breaking SERIOUS stuff in my truck.

im still a newbie, what exactly does 4 barrel mean? doesnt that mean its carburated or something, and i want it to be Fuel Injected so i can go up hills and stuff and not worry about killing it, or am i thinking that wrong? and also are there even kits or anything to turn a carburated engine into a fuel injected one?
OH one more thing, ok you know the differential breather mod? is there something like that on IFS that i should be worried about deep water with? sorry for all the questions i am still fairly new, but im learning gradually, everyone needs to start somewhere, thanks for your help : )

alright bumping every 20min is just postwhoring
4 barrel is a type of carb, yes carb makes the swap easier, yes FI is better off road for angles, you wont stall. for MOBing your stock drivetrain wont hold up very long, new tranny and axels will be in your near future. and diff breathers are a must if you are going through deep water, unless you feel the need to change your diff oil often. keep reading on it and decide if you really want to go through with the swap, as stated above you could look into a v6 swap such as the 4.3 chevy which is just as common as the 350 and you wont have as many breakage issues.

ok here you go

yes there is a breather on the front dif, and yes you can do the mod to the front just search breather mods and you will find more pics and info then you know what to do with

yes you can convert a carb engine to to fuel injection it coast alot of money for the kit because in the kit you get and engine control computer and all the crap needed to do it

they sell carbs that can run up steep hills and on angles look on the holley carb website and much cheaper then a fuel injection kit

the 4.3 will run cooler because it is smaller and makes less power then a 350 but makes much more then the stock toy motors and is a great option a you will not break as much with the 4.3 either

ive done the 4.3 swap had a 350 but decided not to one of my better judgements because a guy did a 350 swap in an 85 4 runner and said after a while its hard to keep cool in the summer and really slow speeds such as in the mudd or crawling

and if you have a carb motor convert it to propane 1200 bucks then it will run on any angle

since you're new to all of this, i'd hate to be that guy, but you should just search... this site, pirate, all different forums, read read read and let it soak in to make sure this is the swap for you, its a big thing and asking questions as they come up isnt a real great idea, id research for a couple months and get all the knowledge possible on your own, and then when you start getting real serious about it start pming guys who have done it and read their write ups so that you can get into the real serious questions, like what are common problems in the swap so that it will go as smoothly as possible....

the way it sounds youll probely have to hire some one to do your engine swap. i put a sbc-350 in my 85 4-runner with a turbo 350+ trans case. chevy trans. theres alot you gotta do to make it work you gotta lift the truck at least 3 inches or the oil pan will hit front rear end unless u can cut and weld an oil pan back together witch i did both but im runnin 35 tires .if you do it this way youll have to cut and weld drive shafts together. its a lot of work but i wouldnt have mine any other way.

No offense or anything but if you need someone to explain to you what a 4 barrel carb is and fuel injection vs. carb, then an engine swap is something you probably dont need to get into right now. Do some research and learn the mechanical side of your truck first.
