Cure for Jasperitis--4.3 swap thread

Been lurking over here and figured it was time to make a swap thread. I've been researching engine swaps since around '99 and have been all over the place 22rte to 2jz and back again. Finally, after multiple issues with a Jasper crate 22re I decided to cure my "Jasperitis" and swap a 4.3 and R150 into my '87 4Runner.

First purchase was an engine out of a '97 Astro with 70k on it including all accessories, harness, ECU, S10 airbox, and exhaust and then I began collecting parts from there.

Here's my current parts/price list (will update as I go):

i like it. too many people on here are toyota puritans and will hate the chevota. i for one like seeing other engines swapped in other than toyota, anyone can bolt in a 3.4 swap, granted wiring can be tricky, but i like the 4.3 and the power potential it has, and the exhaust note is alot burlier than the 3.4. good luck man looking forward to seeing some progress on this thing. also have any pics of the 2jz swap? is that your vis on youtube?

Worked most of the day Saturday (after this crazy ice/snow we're having in TX cleared) and go the motor in. Was able to position it so I've got plenty of room up front and the tcase mount bolts right in behind the R150 and adapter.

First, out with the IFS Diff (pretty sure it's SAS time now )

Good thing I have this

Motor ready to go in

Fits better than the 22re did...

Little interference between the pan and diff mount (nothing a grinder couldn't fix)

Firewall clearance

Next up is fitting the harness, radiator/hoses, and exhaust...

Can't beat the 4.3 from a cost effectiveness perspective, $500 for everything and replacement parts are dirt cheap. I'm a Toyota guy but I wouldn't let that get in the way of building a nice rig for a small sum of money Actually, now that I think about it I might be turning into a chevy guy considering I also have a 5.3 LSx motor and a 53 210 sedan sitting in my garage

Some pics and info of the Supra: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2864782/

Back to watching KOH qualifying er I mean work...

Looks like theres alot of nice 4.3 swaps going on right now on yt. I know the hard core yota guys will give you crap for putting a chevy in a yota. However toyota must think the 4.3 is a good engine cause our toyota fork lift at work has a 4.3 in it.

my question is... do you have to get rid of the ifs to have a 4.3?

and also is there anyway is lowering the cost of the swap? ok say my 1990 toyota 4x4 has a carb, so i would like to keep it carb. i know bla bla bla go efi but this is not a daily or hard core truck.

i have another 22re truck i was going to swap it to efi but it runs to good to tear it apart.

so any chance on a 4.3 toyota 5 speed 4x4 ifs truck? or am i dreaming?

Have you tried to install the exhaust manifold yet, I know on my 85 frame the astro manifolds wouldn't clear the frame, I found a tubular design off an older astro van that fit the right side. Used the cast iron one on the left by notching ending up breaking the frame. So that didn't end up well. Looking for a set of blocking hugging headers now that I am already ca smog legal in ca

Nope, just need a 4" bracket lift.

Yes, make your own parts, and buy used. I beleive 86 4.3s had carbs. But its illegal to put a motor thats older than your vehicle in. At least in WA.

Nope not dreaming, build thread in my sig. IFS, 4.3, r150f.

Build is looking great! 4.3 and a SAS, doesnt get any better than that

Thanks, had the truck fairly stock for 15yrs, havin fun finally doing all the stuff I've wanted to do

Messed with exhaust yesterday, passenger side manifold fits pretty well other than being close to the brake lines. Drivers side is another story, the torsion bar mess keeps the manifold from sitting flat and its pretty much pointing at the frame anyways. Luckily I bought some swap headers of unknown origin for $25 off CL a while back, fit perfect on the drivers side, pass side interferes with the clutch linkage though so I'll be rockin one cast manifold and one rusty old header gotta figure out what to do with the egr too...

Just a clarification. You don't need it to be a bracket lift. You just need some extra space between the front diff and the engine, one way or another. Mine fits just fine without the bracket lift. 2" body/drivetrain lift, and a little clearancing on the oil pan (I have the older model with a steel pan).

Hidden falls is just outside Austin and has some good trails. Up your way there's Barnwell in Gilmer and Bridgeport. Katemcy's worth a trip too from what I hear...

Made some decent progress lately and pretty much just have wiring left (will post some pics later on) but the AA gear drive tcase adapter is giving me fits. I've already dropped the case twice to grind various things not mentioned in the instructions and now the shift rails are jamming on something and it won't shift. Their support is great (<24hr response on emails) but thus far the parts and especially the instructions have a lot to be desired...

Hey, have you had any success with your VSS and 4L60E yet? I am putting a 350/4L60E in my truck and am having difficulty trying to find an easy solution to give the VSS signal to the TBI ECU. Did the Dakota Digital sensor work out for you?

I haven't gotten to the point of firing it up yet but I don't see why it wouldn't work, should go right into your 4l60e and then you'll have a couple of options to attach the toyota speedo cable-grind the cable tip to fit into the adapter (.105" square tang drive) or remove the Toyota cable end and crimp one of these on it: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...17190217-P_x_x

Just have to make sure you have your PCM tuned for an 8k pulse speed sensor (or whatever sensor you're using), this is very important as it will affect how your 4l60 shifts.
