To those who want diesel in Commiefornia

I just put a call into the state ref and put in a request for contact. They will call me back in 2-3 days about putting an OM617 in a 92 truck.

While on the phone I was told the general rule is the engine must be same year or newer OR BIGGER. So there may still be some hope!

As soon as I hear back I will share here and hopefully it helps clear the air some.

Guys, I am also installing a om617 into my 85 xtra cab. I live in san diego and have been researching this for quite a while. Before I bought my donor motor I had asked one of my workers to ask his wife who works at the DMV to find out what was needed to to a change of motive power. (Gas to diesel)
Next day she said I would need to go to the state ref. I told my buddy to ask his wife again to dig deeper and to call me as I knew this not to be true. Se called me personally the next day and said she had made a mistake. I guess she also had another friend ask a few months back and she gave him the same bad advise. Now for the gospe straight from the horses mouth. "Any vehicle built before 1997 and registers as a gas powers vehicle, when converted to diesel does not need anything other than a visual inspection from a DMV employee and a statement of facts form filled out by the owner stating the change of motive power "

Now, you may get a jack A$$ at the counter that will want to send you to the ref. Make sure you tell them to consult a few other people /branches /or have them calk the chula vista branch in san diego. I cannot give out my contacts name but if anyone needs help please feel free to pm me.

PS. Forgot to mention. All rules for engine age vs, vehicle age I need to ask. Was not a concern of mine because my truck and motor are same age. Fyi if your looking for a good kit I got mine from brian at tdswaps.com. great kit very complete and fits Awaome (still need yo notch the pan though )

I read a thread a while ago about changing the vehicle fuel type from gas to diesel through the DMV without going through the ref. I can't remember where it was or what the process was, but it might be worth a shot to check out. I believe it works because you don't have to smog diesels that are before 98 (not to mention the refs sticklers) ... but I wish I could remember where I saw that...
