You generally do it in direct drive (i.e. 4th gear). I will be dynoing again on a loaded dyno. Just glad to finally be able to see my power band. Look how flat that HP is!

Just a question but why did you go with 4.88 over 5.29? seams your loosing power with the heavy toyo tires to begin with and 5.29 should be used with tires over 35".

As a pioneer on this project and only being able to off of other peoples' opinions, the gear ratio calculation said I should have gone with something like a 4.56. I compensated a little and went even lower with 4.88. Since actually owning a running OM617 pickup on 37's, I've said multiple times that you should go 5.29's or even better 5.71's (if you can find them).

When the funds allow, I'm going to be trying meth on both the Toyota and the deuce. They both have tons of potential with as much coal as they roll just cruising around unloaded. I'd like to hear from other people trying meth on their OM617's, but I suppose I'll have to pioneer that project, as well. One thing I don't understand is why the OM617 sucks to start so much with it's 21.5:1 compression ratio; even at 90 degrees I have to use glow plugs. My M35A2 deuce and half has a 22:1 compression ratio and starts on the first crank over even at 20 degrees without any aid. Why can't the OM617 start that easy??

The multifuel engine handles fuel delivery slightly differently than a straight diesel does. The high compression helps, but the pre-combusion chamber is designed to accommodate hotter fuels such as gasoline. I can't explain the physics, but that makes it start easier on diesel as well.

what made you decide on the om617? I've been throwing this idea around for months now but I'd rather go with a kubota or some other type of industrial diesel. a high speed td preferably, they're even more bullet proof (most have timing gears) and get better mpg if set up properly. Not that im saying the merc's dont, just food for thought.

Pyro, are you satisfied with your swap? I been on and off for the last few years about doing mine for my 85 4runner, but I found a low mile cleanest om I have ever seen for 400 bucks running and now I really want it. Just worried if it is worth it. I am a diesel enthusiast and I just wondering if you think you could tow 2-3 jet skis comfortably or a small camper.

Not quite up to stock power, should be around 95hp/160tq to the wheels.
Here is my last run:

2012/08/04
ATS diesel performance
1982 300D
HE221W turbo, A/W intercooler, W/M injection, straight pipe exhaust
147.5hp/220tq
A few years too late for that.

W/M injection is great. It keeps the engine carbon-free and adds around 13hp. Does nothing to lower EGTs on IDI diesels though.
Do not use more than 35% methanol or you will get detonation!

Wow! Sorry for the delayed response; I wasn't getting my notifications for replies.
@Cheap - I've mentioned in here several times. I started with my timing at 24 BTDC and nwo it's at 27 BTDC.
@Rowdy and Darian, I am not fully satisfied. After seeing a truck with a VW 1.9 in it, I wish I would have gone that route. That VW had more power and got better mileage, while fitting and allowing retention of the A/C. The OM617, when properly geared, will have no problem towing. I've hauled a 4wheeler in the bed (500 lbs) and 2 dirt bikes on a trailer (1100 gtw) no problem going 75-80 down the interstate.
@Draggin - Go thru my thread to the fuel tank part. All the info is there... Remove fuel neck restrictor, hook up fuel lines to motor, done. My fuel tank only had a fuel level sensor.
