OM617 into 1987 4Runner SR5
#122
How fast off the line is your 4runner? I have a 94 with an om617 and find that it is really slow. Can anyone point me to some numbers? videos? Hell I'm in SoCal and am willing to meet up so I can experience another build to see if mine is truely lacking in power.

Taking the lazy way out here since I don't have time to re-read all 6 pages, but did you fully register this and smog test it in California? If so, would you mind posting a new thread titled something along the lines of "How to legally title/register/smog an OM617 Toyota in California?" I get mixed responses from all my customers and am not sure what is really correct. I'm sure if you would be willing to share your findings/experience, it would help other people decide if this swap is for them or not. Thanks in advance! FYI we don't have smog or weird registration laws in Nebraska It was as simple as telling the lady to type in "DIESEL" when I renewed my registration.

It's a bummer this thread died before the point of smog. I've done lots of research into this and like all motor swaps in CA, it depends a LOT on the ref you get. Was hoping this thread would have a happy ending and it would be as simple as the OP thought it would be.

Hi JennyGirl, just wanted to thank you for your thread. It was one of 3 great examples I found when I did my conversion 2 years ago. I finally got my hands on a rust free 79 pickup this year. Its so much quicker than my 94 4runner w/the om617. Probably 1500#s lighter. Anyway, great thread and great work too!

Had some questions about the cooling system... if you're still around. Specifically, what fans are you running, and how are they mounted? What radiator? Stock V6? Asking for a friend.... he's running same motor in his 92 4runner and we can't keep it cool when the temp gets very high outside. Any help you can provide, pic's of your pusher setup, etc., would be appreciated!

I am running a pusher. Mounted in front of the stock V6 radiator. You my want to look at my thread 1979 turbo diesel build. Its in pre 83. I have a picture of the setup. I also put an equus mechanical temp gauge in. My 79 really doesn't Gert much over 180. I run the fan in traffic once in a while. The 94 4runner stays around 200 which is ideal running temp for the om617. The radiator is 90$ at rockauto. I bought the spectra. Take a look at the bracket I made you will probably want to do something similar. So pusher fan blows on the rad and into the engine bay. Its on a switch w/a relay. I just turn it on when I need it. I really didn't want to run a temp sensor dependant switch for it. I like my trucks w/ minimal electronics. Hope this answers your questions.

Nice write up and great work Jenny. I am just starting to contemplate putting a diesel in my 1990 4Runner. To bad this thread has died off, I would also like to know how the CA smog went.

The information I got from the San Network about 2018 smog laws said that you don't have to smog test diesels older than 1996 with a GVWR of less than 10000 lbs in California. I have no idea how true that is, but would be worth looking into.

Thank you for the information.

I think it's a no-go in CA unless you get really lucky or pull some kind of trick. Because swaps in CA, on post '75 vehicles, diesel or not, the motor has to be same year or newer than the swap vehicle which rules out the 617 in anything besides an early-mid 1st Gen Runner. I think the 617 went away in the states in 87'. I wondered about if it was swapped legally out of state and then came back into CA as a titled diesel...
