Arrow Successful 7m swap

Is there any one on here that has sucessfully sawped a 7M, 2JZ, or 1JZ in to a 4x4 pickup with IFS.?

I am interested in doing this swap. Im trying to gather as much info as possible before I do it. so far the main issue seams to be that the oil pan will hit the front Diff as well as severly over load the front torsion suspension due to the excess weight. What can I do about these issues? i have searched but all the info i can find is very vauge..

any help would be great! thanks

On the 1jz and 2jz a front sump will clear with only dropping the dampener if you leave the motor in the forward position, but this will make for a radiator and fan challenge that one guy fixxed by cutting out his front grill, to slide the motor back and have more room up front you can either just mod you pan, I decided to do a 2" driveline lift and everything cleared fine, (I already had a 3" body lift too)

So what did u do to compensate for the extra weight of the 1jz? I have torsion bars so I don't know what to do about stiffening them up it would probably look funny for a 4x4 to have a dragster rake to it. So I guess there not much to do about the 7m oil pan huh? I've never heard of a drive line lift how does that work?

I think the cressida 7m oil pan and pick-up will clear the IFS.

For some reason, I was under the impression the 7m was just like 50lbs more than a 22re.

good luck and post pics

i replaced my TB with downey ones (due to a heavy ARB bull bar), as far as the driveline lift there is one guy out there that came up with a rubber spacer kit to lift it all, he did it to get that low hanging trans mount and t case a little higher up for better clearance, i just fabbed trans and eng mounts up.

If you ditch the dampener, the cressida pan and pump combo will clear the front diff. You will have to drill a new hole for the dipstick if you use the motor from a supra (masonry bit works well on cast iron), as the pan sump is more in the middle. BIC performance out of British Columbia makes mounts to drop a 1j/2j on 22re mounts, although the intended swap is into a 2wd...the front diff may interfere using his mounts. I am working on this swap right now, and I cut out the core support so I could first get the motor in, and then mount the stock rad in front of it instead of behind (automatic lower tank, the tranny cooler will become my PS cooler and be part of the PS return line from one side of the engine bay to the other) and use a puller fan (escort I think, not sure where it's from). Will fab some reinforcement from square tube and flat stock to replace the hood latch support area, and use hood pins. Using a 2" body lift as well. I cut a lot from the underside of the hood to make room for the upper tank and rad cap, cut off the upper two brackets for the front bumper brackets so the rad could sit there, as well as two tabs from the bottom centre of the grill, but it all closes. Would be nice to have the motor and inch more forward, but then you are talking a crossmember in addition to custom mounts, and the cooling issue gets even harder to solve.

Instead of using cressida oil pans, you can also use a 5M-GE oil pan off of an 82-86 Supra.

yes, really

The MKII Supra, and cressida both have front sump oil pans, vs the MKIII supra (where the 7M-GTE came from) which is rear sump.

MKII guys put the 5M pans on 7Ms all the time when they swap them in. The only thing you need to worry about is the turbo oil drain. You'll have to weld a bung onto the pan, but you'll have to do that for a cressida pan too.

If you're planning on putting the motor in place of a 22R, use the 5M upper mounts, and bolt the lower rubber part on from the 22R mounts. then you can bolt the 7M right in place of a 22R. Funny what happens when they design the two motors for the same purpose. (Both R series and M series motors were designed to fit into the A chassis)
