Why can't the 3.4 motor mounts be used?

+1; "grind to fit"... this is the motto for most swaps. Also if you do the "washers behind the A/C bracket" you may need a slightly longer belt.

If you're worried about making the mount too thin and breaking the ear, you could throw a weld around the outside of the ear to give it some more material/support. Did that when I drilled my flanges... "just in case".

So far so good.

Mounts

I just went through this exact thing on my swap yesterday. I am not entirely sure what mounts i used since i had a bunch lying around, but mine were also a bit thicker behind the ac bracket. I just ground it down to fit. Took a matter of minutes and now it fits like a glove. I might have used the 3.4 mounts and 3.0 rubber bushing parts. Like i said not sure just pieced them together.

To clear up the mount confusion:

96-98 4Runners and 95.5-99 Tacomas used cast mounts. (12311-62030 R, 12315-62040 L)

99-02 4Runners and 00+ Tacomas use stamped steel/welded mounts. (12311-62070 R, 12315-62080 L)

The 96-98 Cast mounts were THICKER than the 99-02 STAMPED mounts. This is why people with the 96-98 engines don't have problems when installing the AC bracket, because the bracket already fits the 89-95 Mounts properly.

You have to use the 89-95 V6 mounts which are also Cast when swapping into a non-3.4 vehicle. (12311-65020 R, 12315-65020 L)

The 99+ 4Runners also used a different AC bracket, which was thicker.

In order to retain AC, you need to use the AC bracket from a 96-98 4Runner, part number 88431-35070 OR just grind the mount itself down.

That's the best explanation I've read for this situation. Actually, it's the only one I've read. Thanks for clearing it up.

One of these days I'll make a 3.4 FAQ and spell this all out.

When I get done with my swap, I will post every part I used, to exact specs, and part numbers. Granted every swap is different, but it should help.

I've also swap the engine mounts. Some folks had trouble with the passenger side mount where the AC bracket goes. Since I had to swap the AC compressor, the T100 compressor was removed which exposed the bracket. I removed all the bolts except the ones that allow you to swing it out. The 3.0 engine mount fit in great without any grinding.

I guess I have the right combo then.

Correct, the T100 also uses the cast mounts since they built the T100 up to 1998. When they eliminated the T100 in 1999 and redesigned the front end of the 4Runner (as well as electronics, and other things) the mounts were changed as well. Thus, your T100 AC bracket will work perfectly.

I also used the 3.4 mounts, and mine was a 3.0 originally... it was kind of a pita to get it lined up (took about 45 minutes) but it is in there! I still don't have the truck running (I don't get much time to work on it) and the hood has yet to go back on, so idk about any clearance issues. But like I said, its in there...

I couldn't find anybody local that had or wanted to sell the 3.0 mount stuff. Any 3.0 stuff for that matter.

I ended up using the all the 3.4 parts from my 99 donor 4runner. However, I had to fab my own frame perches. I had two complete 3.4 engines, I'm cheap and like to make stuff. I used what I had and it came out nice.

So if you HAVE TO.......you can use 3.4 mounts. Not the easiest or most recommended way but, you CAN do it.

Here's my home built mount/perch.

So let me see if I have this correct. I keep the 3.0 mounts on the frame and remove the brackets from the 3.0 and put them on the 3.4. Is this correct}

I forgot about this thread! Ok for anybody that needs additional clarification, I did it both ways... (I overlooked this detail in my research)
The 3.4 mounts [I]can[I] be used... I had mine in with them, running and all. but you kinda have to force them to line up (took me about 45 minutes). I switched to the 3.0 mounts after reading forms on here. For starters it was a lot easier to get them lined up and bolted down(took me maybe 20 minutes and i was feeling lazy that day). Also they seem to fit 100x better and I didn't measure it but the engine seems to sit a little lower. Hope this saves someone from having to do it twice like I did hahaha!

Hey guys anyone know what is that valve under the yellow bolt . Im having trouble to put the 3.0 engine mount ti the 98 3.4 , that little hose/ valve is in my way .

Ancient reply here but for anyone else browsing, that's a coolant drain plug for the block. The little petcock gets in the way of the motor mount bracket, but thankfully it's just pressed into the block. Grab it with some vicegrips and twist and pull, and it'll come right out.
