3.4 Swaps The 3.4 V6 Toyota engine

What would you do?

I just bought a 1998 4runner that was rolled... The whole drive train is good and it has an automatic tranny so it also has the auto ecu and harness. I have a 22rte w/ a 5spd in my 1988 4runner now.

I have never done anything like this before (heck, I've never pulled an engine before). But I'm going to put this 3.4 into my 4runner. So, here's the question.

Would you stay with the 5spd tranny or use the automatic from the 98 4runner? If I go with a manual tranny I will have to find a manual ecu, and change the plug on the auto harness, right?

I think it would be easier to use the auto. You would have to modify the bell housing of your 5spd to bolt up to the 3.4, and you would have to trick the ECM into thinking its in neutral all the time.

I am looking for a bell housing from a manual tranny from a 3.0, I'll get a new clutch kit too so I'll have everything in that department if I stick with the 5spd. I just wasn't too sure on the whole ecu and harness portion.

I think you can still use your clutch master, but you have to reroute the lines depending on where the engine and tranny end up sitting. Your clutch slave sits on the opposite side of the trans when compared to newer bell housings. I guess you could cut into the new housing to keep the slave on the same side, and close the hole for the original clutch slave. Not really sure about this stuff... Search will lead the way!

after i read your title and got myself a klondike bar i came back down and as i don't know much about the compatibility of the parts i just thought i'd give my opinion that manuals are always more fun. unless you're trying to eat a klondike bar while driving it.

After completing the swap, I like my auto more and more each day. I am fairly sure that i will be keeping it.

The auto would MUCH simpler to swap since you have everything sitting right there. Finding a manual harness is very difficult for a fair price. ECM's not too bad but still $75-$150. Harnesses can be $200 or so. Then switching all the wiring will be a pain, especially if you know nothing about electrical. Hard enough keeping the auto.

If you are as noobie as you say, a clear no brainer is the install the auto. You can always change later after you LEARN A TON by doing the swap.
