Transmission Question

I have an automatic transmission from a 98 4runner that was sitting on the side for a while. Surface rust has developed in the bellhousing area of the transmission. The rust is on the metal in the back of the bellhousing pocket (best I can describe it). Do I have to knock it completely off to bare metal? Do I have to apply RTV gasket to the plate between the motor and trans before installing it together?

That metal part is the oil pump body. It won't hurt if it has some surface rust on it. Some Scotch Brite will clean it up nicely if you feel like cleaning it.

No, you don't need to use any sealant on that plate.

While you have the transmission out I would recommend you replace the oil pump seal & O-ring. Cheap & easy to replace.
