Well my 3.0 threw a rod about 4 months ago, and I had a co-worker swap in another 3.0 with 55K miles on it. This new motor however, just blew a headgasket last night. He has agreed to do a 3.4 swap for me for $800 labor, it will be done in a pipefitting warehouse, so exhaust problems are not considered as there is many available piping, equiptment, and welders to make my own exhaust with.

His main concern about the swap is of course, the difficulty. He doesn't want to have to spend all his time reading up on information, he wants me to give him the engine and take it up from there. With that being said, should I purchase ORS's basic kit, or Full kit? Of course I am trying to save money here, but my main goal here is to make it a reliable trouble-free engine swap. With the full kit, I shouldn't need any other parts for the swap would I? He is a mechanic and is very knowledgable, though he doesn't get the chance to work on Toyotas very often and knows nothing of the swap. Will he be able open the ORS kit and go on from there with ease?

 

I think the full ORS kit would cover all the bases.

However, it's an expensive way to go.

If you friend doesn't want to deal with wiring, then get the ORS harness as a minimum.

I have the radiator hose part numbers listed on my swap as well as belts.
I had the PS hose made locally.
Battery relocation tray has many methods (I fabbed my own)
Fuel lines from the 3.4 will mate to the 3.0 without an adapter.

You didn't say what tranny you have... but if manual you'll need some clutch parts. OEM or Marlin would be your best choices.

Mechanically, the 3.4 drops right in. Motor mounts and bellhousing all mate perfectly. The trick is the wiring... which ORS would solve for you.

I guess the answer is if you have the budget and want plug and play (or very close to it) go with the ORS full kit. If you (and your friend) have some time, are creative and are willing to look through a couple threads here on YT... then you can save a lot of money.

 

That's not a good sign LOL. I'd say he is going to regret that quote he gave you (if he sticks to it). I'd say a basic rule of thumb should be if you can't do this swap yourself, don't do it, only exception would be if ORS was the one doing the work.

 

As usual... Mt_Goat has some good points.

You don't want someone doing the job just to get it done. You'll be in a nightmare situation should problems develop in the future and you'll have no real idea what was done.

If your friend isn't into it... hesitate.

 

Maybe I was too negative earlier, if he is a friend and you trust him maybe things will work out. The more you can watch over his shoulder the better.

I'd recommend the full ORS kit if you can swing the cost. I think Mike has better instructions now too (better than a few years ago), if not, expect to call ORS a lot for clarification.

 

Well thats just the thing, I'll be the one doing the research for him. I'll definetely buy the ORS harness, and I'll gather up all the required information and put it together for him so as he gets to each step, he'll have yotatech's info all gathered for him. He is a friend and I trust his knowledge.

I am okay with purchasing the Basic kit for 1,100, but I'm not so sure on the Full kit. What parts will I need to gather for the clutch? Everything else I should be okay on. Thanks for the replies guys! I love my truck and even though I don't have all the knowledge or time to do the swap myself, I dont want to let this thing go and I sure dont want more 3.0's in it!

 

Does that one come with the instructions? Make sure you get a kit with instructions.

 

Clutch pressure plate for 3.4 engine - Toyota part number 31210-35210-84
Clutch disk from 3.4 engine - Toyota part number 31250-35352-84
Clutch pilot bearing from 3.4 engine - Toyota part number 90363-12002-77
Clutch throw out bearing from 3.0 engine - Toyota part number 31230-35070-77

I guess the 3.4 throw out bearing is to long, so make sure you get one for the 3.0. Flywheel from the 3.4 will work with this clutch setup. I was able to use my 3.0 starter with the 3.4 flywheel.

Oh yeah... and don't put the pressure plate in facing the wrong way like I did. Dumb mistake, but kept me from driving for a few extra days until I figured it out.
