smithy's 1991 4runner 3.4 swap

Well its been well over due for me to create my 3.4 swap thread, i Finnish it summer of 2010, so hear are the facts. with the 3.0s lack of hp and heavy 4runner i decided it was time to do a hart trans plant on my beloved 1991 4runner. i did feel kinda bad about ripping her hart out. but justified it as being beter than the alternative (scrap yard) wich i could never do. i new i wanted something reliable and something that had after market parts readily available, and that i definitely wanted to stay TOYOTA. im sorry i just cant stand some one shoving a ford or chevy in a toyota it maks me sick, but to each there own. any was back on topic i picked up a 98 4runner 3.4l 5vz-fe motor, wiring harness, manual trans, and drive shaft for $800.00 not a bad deal.

after re-bilding the 3.0 TWICE i decided i had enough and wanted to have a reliable motor for once. the first thing on my list was to do a complet rebuild of the 3.4, and not have to worry about a thing once she's in.

so i went to my dads work ( he works at toyota of glendora as a sales manager and i get his discount) and ordered a list that almost brok the bank

- head gasket kit
- all new head bolts
- water pump
- timing belt
- thermostat
- timing belt bearings
- timing belt tenchiner
- accessory belts ( alt, power steering, A/C)
- 6 dual ground plugs
- new plug wires
- gasket rebuild kit
. cam seals
. main rear seal
. exhaust seals
. various intake seals
. valve cover gaskets
- valve kit
- new crank pulley/harmonic blancer( ug broke the one i had trying to get the dang crank bolt out)
- 2 nock censers wh pig tail ( learned my lesson wh the 3.0)
- two o2 censers
i know im missing some but thats all i remembered rnow.

so with this order placed i decided to send the heds out to the machine shop, where they cleaned the heads and replaced a few worn parts in the valve train.

ok i think its time for some pics

this is the last pic i have with the 3.0 still in

bitter sweet pulling her out, she may have been under power and fuel hungry but ill miss her.

me thinking what have i goten my self in to this time.

only took two bloody nuclease and about a day and a halve to get the 3.0 out .

Size: 193.9 KB

with the motor out i decided to do some removal of unnecessary parts and a little cleaning
ie
i removed the 3.0 evap
the cruse control (used it only once in 5 years so its not going back in)
the abs (i dont think it worked to begin with.)

with some room to work with i started to mock up my dual battery trays, 3.4 evap and install the clutch petal and master cylinder.

and the clutch petal

cense the machine shop dragging there feet, i decided to swap from driving flanges to manual hubs, i dont have any pics of the proses but ill explane what i did,

concerned with geting the ADD system together agan i decided to dump it all together and go to manual hubs.( ive wanted to for some time and now seemed ideal) picked up some hubs on CL for cheap, cleaned, panted and rebuilt them,

Name: get-attachment-1aspx.jpg

Size: 51.5 KB

next i got rid of the ADD actuator. inorder to have 4wd agan i slid the slide gear over so it would be engaged allows and welded it in place, then i created a plate to bolt on where the actuator mounted to. simple and fail proof.

with the heads still gone i decided to tern my attention to the 3.4 block.
i striped the block down and started cleaning and painting.

heads before machine shop.

and the cams

the next day the heads ere finaly done!!!
i was so excited to get them on i forgot to take the after pics
but i do have installation pics

this is me thinking " dang ime going to shear these bolts just watch" well it never happened and the rest of the assembly went like clock work.

i relocated the dipstick, and taped and plugged the original one then welded a bracket to suport it.

modified the oil baffle and pick up
switched out oil-pans and oil psi sending unit and painted some intake parts

the entire rebuild took a week but thats just because i duble checked my every step.

after that week was over i ended up with this

i was rally pleased how she shined up!!!!

next came time to start the mock test fits for the custom x-over, air initake, and thepower sterting lines.

the first look of the 3.4 in my 4runner!!!!!!!!!!!!

but that was short lived i just needed some measurements for the x-over

then repeted before fully welding them together.

then another test fit

next on my list was to make a new norkle as my old one was on the other side. for the 3.0

Name: CIMG1259.jpg
Views: 1508
Size: 111.4 KB

note the wires hanging.

with the intake figured out it was time to install the 3.4one last time
Name: get-attachmentaspx-2.jpg
Views: 1555

man i wanted to drive her so bad at this point. it was killing me!!!!!!!!!

next the wiring.
what a hedach but after talking to dntsdad it started to clear up and things fell in to place.

or just fall apart!!!! lol every time i look at that last photo it just reminds me of all the late nights and confusing wiring.

but i pressed on determined to finish and get her running.

a few days later things started to go smother and i even got the dash back together

Name: CIMG1270.jpg
Views: 1323

and in the 4runner

Name: get-attachment-9aspx.jpg
Views: 1285

i added a few gages as well

an oil temp
a water temp( my old one went out a while a go, fixed it but just wanted a back up if it ever accrued agan)
a volt meter( same problem as water temp)
and an air to fuel gage ( for when i supercharhe her in the future !!)

got the shifters installed to

and the clutch cancel and a vacuum gage ( wow i didn't realize this but i think im addicted to gages)

it wasent long before it was time to test my work and on the first try she cranked over and roared to life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is how she sits to day

Truly impressive work Smithy! Thanks for sharing your fantastic experience and hard work: it's an inspiration! Would you be willing to share your impressions of driving the 2nd gen with the 3.4L in it?
Had you modded your 3vze at all? (and, will you mod your 5vzfe with headers or s/c?)

thank you for the complement. i had done a few little things to the 3.0, (EGR delete, ISR, remote auto tranny cooler, snorkel,) just some simple mods to help the motor, by far the snorkel was the best mod, i gained a few mpg's with it.

i loved my 4runner before, but now that i can squeal my 33's in second and climb hills in 5gear and get a few more mpg's i love her even more.

as for future mods a supercharger is definitely in my sights but only when funds allow, when i pull the trigger on the supercharger ill probably go with an underdog fuel management system with 7th injector and camry cams( witch are suposed to give you more lift). heders will be next but not for a while i custom made my xover out of 2.5 mandrel bent tubing along with the rest of my exhaust so im not worried about restriction.

Nice work on the engine! Looks like shes got some love in her! Im doin this swap soon myself and am exploring different options for a custom snorkel. Im wondering what your using for an air filter?? Whats that copper thing your intake is running into on the inside of your engine bay??

Nice build! I'm digging the paint scheme of the black and copper.
Question: What's the compression supposed to be when you check at the spark plugs? Anyone know? I read on someone's build that "normal" is 160-170 psi. Is this true?

Hmm, cool man. Thanks for the reply.

So now that it been up and running for a while, hows everything holding up? Did you ever get around to the camry cams?? Thats another idea I'm considering. I figure since the engine is already out and gutted, probably better now than later...

Ha... Liquor and a touch screen phone are not my specialty...

What i was trying to say is i havent been able to find too much info on the camry cam swap. My concern is that the the extra lift will put uneeded stress on the engine. My runner is a daily driver, i dont want to be dealing with a bunch of problems down the road. However, that being said, ive also already got my 2nd gen sc and im going to be pickin up the urd 7th injector kit.

What heads did you pick up?? Im looking for used downeys but if i cant find them by the time i need them, i'll probably settle for some thorleys.

Excellent work!

You really should have put in the headers when you had the motor out of the truck, putting them in now will not be fun lol.

As far as the supercharger goes, go for it! I just bought one for my 02 Tacoma and I'm waiting on 1 bolt to come in and its time for boost!

Get a wideband in there ASAP, the supercharger tends to lean out at high RPM's and at WOT, the wideband will assure you that you're staying stoich and not running too lean.

The URD 7th injector kit is your best bet, it comes with everything you need, fuel pump, wiring harness, controller, injector, etc. It's a complete kit.

If you need/want any info on the supercharger feel free to ask me, I will try to answer as much as I can.

What's this about the Camry cams? This is the first i've heard of them.

Apparently the cams from a camrys 3vz-fe can be used in the 5vz to get a bit more lift. I havent found too much about it. There are a few guys on here that have run this mod on their 3.4l swaped mr2's. Im still waiting to see this one on a truck.

That intake looks perfect! If you don't mind, can you take some more pictures of the assembly? I'd like to copy what you have done.

Thank you !!!

Andrew.
