repinning auto harness to manual. Can it be done?
#21
is your truck a 92, meaning it didnt come stock with an OBD2 port. you should just hide your OBD2 port, pull the bulb out of your check engine light, and let them do the emissions test as a 1992 . that way they just put it on the dyno and let the sniffer do the work and bypass all the OBD2 stuff.
When they do an emission test in most states they turn the ignition on (to ACC) to make sure the check engine light comes on then goes off. So pulling the bulb will only make you fail right off the bat.
You can pass emissions with the check engine on in most states, you just have to figure out how much the state wants (in $$$) to allow you to do so. Here they want you to spend $450.00 before they allow you to pass.

what is there to repin? the manual ECU should plug right into the auto wiring harness right? might have to move a few wires around as far as clutch safety switch but what am i missing?

98 and 99 use's the same plugs and wiring combos for both auto and manual ECU's.

I do know for sure that a 1997 AUTO ECU will NOT work on a 1998 AUTO WIRING HARNESS. The plugs are the same but the wires are in different places.

greg thanks for your info. For those of you that dont know, this dude knows his stuff!!!
I am being like a girl on this as i cannot for the life of me make up my mind whether to go back to manual or stay auto.
Going manual is just about impossible and make the smog a simple task. Staying auto makes smog easier, much easier since its already done and state approved, but I really, really want to go back to manual.

if you already got bar'd on the truck the transmission shouldn't matter. the hard work is already done. the only thing now that makes up for smog is the engine not trans. don't be fooled. like i said the hard work is been done.. just make sure you don't throw codes, and you should be set.
also you should have smogged your truck at the ref. my buddy suggest that i do this. get it all done in one shot.

I dont think that this is correct. The motor and trans share the same ECm so any adjustment (swapping out) of the ECM would need another BAR visit and approval from what I can tell. I have been too lazy to get over there but I am almost certain of it. The BAR sticker clearly states that I have an auto:

Also, in my case, altering the transmission by going to manual would also mean altering the OBD2 exhaust since it will never fit in the with the shift fork in the way.
SAying all that, I really do not know what the hell to do to make everything legal and simple for smog rather than keep the auto.
Also, the ref does not smog your vehicle. he only inspects it for all the proper equipment that the donor vehicle requires. Its a 45 minute wait at the most while he pulls up the info from AllData or something and then checks everything off. A sniffer was never used and never hooked up to a smog machine. He never even accessed my OBD2 port because there is no way he could have found it without asking, which he never did and I was watching him the whole time. Mine is in the glovebox and he never got in there.

No waiting for the renewal from the DMV because a smog is expensive and only is good for 90 days. Also, since I am changing back to manual that will require a new visit to the BAR

Score!!!
Purchased a 95.5 3.4 manual 4x4 ECM yesterday for $50 with the plugs and a few inches of wire still intact. That will help immensely in matching everything up to my auto harness.
Also, he had the same configuration but for an 03 as well for $50 if anyone is interested.
Anyone have TIS access right now or a overall wiring diagram for a 95.5 Tacoma.
If so dntsdad@comcast.net
thanks

I have already done this whole process of repinning the harness to a manual since the last post in this thread.
My current progress picks up on post 244 of my build thread. I repinned the auto harness that i had, and bought a 97 manual ECM, and then matched everything up. Really wasn't that difficult in retrospect.
I have a manual ECM for $50 if you want it. Its from a 95.5 Tacoma.
