Question on 1996 r150f trans
What I want to do is:
Swap a 3.4L / R150F combo out of a 1996 Tacoma 4x4 into my 1989 4Runner.
As I understand it there is an earlier R150F found behind the 3.0 liter V6 (pre-1996)
I was looking to purchase the Advanced Adapter PN 50-5708 but they specifically reference the R150F / 3.0L combination in their product description………. I called customer service and the nice Fella on the phone thought that this adapter would NOT fit my 1996 3.4L / R150F combination.
My Question:
So……. are there two R150F’s with different tail housings?
I apologize in advance if this is a dead horse but My searching capabilities are limited (old age disease)…..I tried and what I found was conflicting.

What he is asking is can he use the 96 3.4 transmission with his earlier Tcase.
And the simple answer is....not so simple.
The 96+ is a drivers side drop Tcase. The 95-earlier is a pass side drop Tcase.
The 50-5708 AA kit is for 88-95 R150F/R151F transmissions ONLY. It only works with Pass side drop V6 tcases.
However, there IS hope. Marlin Crawler sells the adapter you need. http://www.marlincrawler.com/transfe...v6-drivetrains It appears they are currently out of stock, but give them a call and talk to a rep there, who could assist you. They can tell you exactly what you need, and how long it would take to get in stock.
It's going to cost you around $500 to do it this way. The only other solution is to find an earlier R150F transmission, tcase, clutch, flywheel, drivelines, crossmember and shifters. Usually can pick that stuff up for cheap because its plentiful and people practically give it away.

Both transmissions will bolt to the 3.4 motor, the early 3.0 and later Tacoma versions of the R150. I have used both in my vehicle at one time or another.
The only differences on the motor side are the placement of the slave cylinder (flips from passenger the driver on the Tacoma version......you will need to replumb a line from the clutch master to the slave), and the need for different length bolts for some of the mounting shoulders from the transmission to the motor, and the starter will require different bolts as well to mount it.
They are different on the back however as Death Cougar noted. You can buy adapters for both to drop a gear driven Tcase to the passenger side from either Marlin or Trail Gear with Marlin being the superior product of the two. Trail Gear offers a more "economical" solution.
the better solution is to sell your Tacoma R150 and pick up a good 3.0 R150 as there will be less cost involved and it will be easier to buy aftermarket items such as crossmembers, etc.
I assuming that your 89Runner is currently auto and you wish to go stick?
What is your goal with this vehicle? That may help decide your best course of action
