It looked to be in the upper eighties and the axle was pretty clean...not sure if the internals are good though. what should I be looking for to ensure its good?

you can get a solid front axle from about $150 to $350 with the 85 being most desireable....but depends on supply and demand. I wouldnt pay anymore than 350 bils for one unless it is in great condition or has an upgraded gear setup.

I bought this kit from a vendor on eBay:

A VERY complete kit.

RobD,
I really like that price! How long have you had the parts on your motor? The list doesn't have my engine on it so I wonder if the parts are universal.

Got them put in last weekend, actually. So far, so good. I've put ~1500 kms (~940 miles) on it since last Thursday.
The kit came exactly as they state in the ad (even got a bag of peanut M&M's, my favourite!)
That other guy's ad you showed doesn't guarantee what belt he's sending you. Not that I'm calling anyone out on it, but if they can't or won't guarantee it, I don't trust them.
My swap engine is a 97 Tacoma 3.4 with a manual tranny. They ask you what your engine combination is.

Search the link in my sig about the mini FAQ thread, I have pics in there showing the differences between the 3 different mini truck front axles used from 79-85.
As mentioned you want to get the 84-85 axle due to the length of the factory truss.
You should also get the knuckle gussett kit and upper truss kit from any reputable company (marlin crawler, trail- geAr etc)
