... but no ECU, or anything else. I'd have to hunt down all the miscellaneous bits. Only a couple hundred for the engine w/160k miles. I'd swap it into my '89 4runner, which isn't a daily driver. Worth it?

Up to you but a nightmare could be in your future.

Always best to find a complete donor that is wrecked.

I'm leaning towards doing it. The engine is from a 2000 model year 4runner. I'd have the VIN# of the vehicle it came from too. Wrecking yards everywhere are awash in 4runners of identical configuration.* I'd be taking the chance that I could find another 4runner standing around that I could harvest for the accessory bits.

I'll research a bit more first though.

* I'd rather be living out in Montana, but here in the upper midwest there is at least one advantage, there are hundreds of wrecking yards in a 100 mile radius from me.

So i guess you're the guy to ask: If my 3.4 donor is auto and my '89 4runner is auto converted over to R150 manual am I looking at any unusually difficult issues?

NOt really. You'll have to source a manual ECM and then wither but a new harness for the manual, or convert your harness to manual. The conversion is not hard but can be time consuming. If you have more time that money, thats the way to go. One day i hope to say F it....I have more money than time!!

Take a look in my 3.4 swap 101 sticky thread. I tried to cover the basics of converting the harness to manual

I know with my 88 to 99 swap, i did have to source a manual ECM, but the auto harness and manual harness were pretty much identical plug wise. The only thing I had to add in was a 4wd indicator (since the harness was from a 2wd auto). If i'm not mistaken, 2000 was a drive by wire year, which is a whole other can of worms...

Thanks for the feedback. Is the 4wd indicator circuit in the engine harness or in the body harness?

In my first post I said the engine is a 2000, but it is actually a late '99.

I just got a 2000 Tacoma Electrical Wiring Diagram manual so I can start studying. I'm keeping an eye out for a used 4runner EWD manual so I can be really sure I'm looking at the right thing.

I also got to look under the hood at an actual '98 4runner yesterday. Compared to my '89 it seems like the engine bay is pretty clean, with most of the sensors and vsvs being mounted on the engine.

Pretty sure the 4wd indicator is in the engine harness. I had to run my own from the switch to the ECU.

The reverse light is the other thing I was thinking about.

My '89 4runner is automatic. I have an R151F 5 spd trans and a 23 spline RF1A t-case that I'm gonna swap in. I have an '88 4runner donor for all my manual bits (pedal assembly, clutch hydraulics, bell housing, SR5 gauge cluster, etc). I'm thinking I may swap the body harness as well so the transmission wiring bits and the clutch pedal switch are all properly integrated.

All this with the plan in mind to eventually mate it with the 5VZFE ECU/PCM.
