Few questions about picking the right 3.4L

I've been doing a lot of reading. I've got a 1990 4WD manual that needs a new / other engine. I've found a few trucks on copart.com. I want to buy a whole car as recommended so I have a lot of parts I need.

I know I need a 1996-2002 manual transmission from a 4Runner or Tacoma. Are there any years that are better? I thought I saw somewhere that one year has dip stick hole needed for a swap is already drilled and with a plug.

Any other advice when looking for a 3.4L?

Mine was from a '97 Tacoma. The dipstick hole was already in the block and simply plugged. All I had to do was drive it out from the bottom.

The throttle is also cable instead of drive-by-wire. This simplifies the install a bit.

Depending on where you are, you might have to go through emissions certifications. If that's the case, they might get sticky on what ECU you're running and where the exhaust goes.

Engines up to 1999 had the plugged dipstick hole or so I have researched. Mine is a 99.

One thing I've heard also is that 4runner engines don't have EGR valves so that makes things a bit easier. I think the EGR would be really close to the steering shaft. Could make life a bit easier. Mine is from a 98 4Runner.

My '97 Taco engine didn't have EGR, either.
