automatic 3.4 engine with manual 3.0 transmission

The transmission bolts up but there is no pilot bearing for the input shaft on the transmission. Will I have any issues if I proceed with the manual transmission?

There's no place to put one because the engine came out of an automatic.

hmmmmm......Mine came from an auto and it had the provision for the pilot along with countless other people. This has been somewhat of a 3.4 swap urban legend that there were auto cranks without the hole for a pilot but as far as i know it had never been proven.

You may be the first.

You have a picture of the rear of the crank??

This is mine from an 97 auto Runner.

Post it up or email it to me at dntsdad@comcast.net and I will do it for you if you don't know how.

Also, would it even be possible to install the tranny without the hole? Wouldn't the shaft nose hit the crank without the hole there? I would think that even if it did fit, running the motor/shaft without a pilot bearing would be disastrous but I am not sure.

...and yes, it would be disastrous to run a MT without the pilot bearing, that is why people replace them when they go bad or with a clutch job.

Pictures that Radtoy emailed to me.

Top one is 3.4 and lower one is the 3.0 I would assume but I will let him post the correct info.

Thank you dntsdad.

The top picture is the 3.4 and the bottom picture is from the 3.0. notice the 3.0 bearing has a smaller hole to support the input shaft of the manual transmission where the 3.4 does not.

Pretty sure that's because there's no bearing currently residing in the 3.4 crank, whereas the 3.0 still has the bearing installed/rusted in place. I'll check, but I believe the 3.0 and 3.4 pilot bearing is the same part number, so if you're using the 3.0 flywheel you can just use a 3.0 clutch kit and put a new pilot in, too.

Edit after checking part numbers(for my swap, at least)
2000 Tacoma pilot bearing part no: 90363‑12002
1990 4Runner pilot bearing part no: 90363‑12002

They're both vz's after all.

Hi Guys,

I just picked up a 1995 4-Runner with blown head gaskets and 254k on the clock. Knowing what I do about the 3vze I hate to do a complete rebuild and with that many miles its probably not a good idea to do just the head gaskets either. How big of a job is it to mate the 3.4 to the 1995 5 speed manual? Is there a thread that shows this as a step by step so I can get an idea of what I'd be getting into?
