Any downsides to using a 2002 3.4 for a swap?
Hey guys,
I am considering buying a salvaged title 2002 4Runner and pulling the motor and trans to swap into my 1989 4Runner.
Are there any model year issues with the 2002 3.4 for this swap? I know that it will have the wideband O2 sensor, which is good if I put an S/C on it. Anything about that model year that is bad?
Edit: Does the 2002 3.4 have a throttle by wire system on it? I have seen it mentioned for later model 3.4's, but have not seen an exact year range.
Also, does anyone have experience buying a whole vehicle that has been wrecked and what is a good price? This one has driver's side fender/A-pillar, rocker panel, and frame damage. Took a pole to the driver's door. It has 85k miles on the motor/trans.
Thanks guys, hoping to join the 3.4 club soon.

As far as I know that should work great for you. I would be more concerned about matching the drivetrains. Automatic with automatic and manual with manual. Buying the entire vehicle is certainly a good idea. As for pricing I have seen 1200 as a good price and 1800 as a normal price.

Wabbit, the whole vehicle for $500? Damn, that is pretty cheap.
This guy is holding firm at $3700, and I'm way down at $1500. Not sure if we will ever come to an agreement on a price that will make both of us happy. He bought it back from the insurance company after wrecking it into a pole, so it has a salvage title. In my opinion it is not repairable, as the A pillar is pushed 8 inches into the footwell and the frame is bent on the driver's side.
Thanks guys,
Mike

paid $1700 for mine and sold off the extra parts and ended up making a profit off it.
If you are diligent, you I think $1000-$2000 is a good price IF its in good shape and you can recoup costs in parts sold. Mine was in immaculate condition, other than the front drivers side where she hit a parking lot pole at about 15MPH

Check out www.offroadsolutions.com and click on tech. It has great information for you if you are interested in doing the swap. No way would I spend $3700 for a rolled vehicle. I picked up a rolled Tacoma for a $100 at a local junk yard, but it does help to know people. I live in northern Va. and most rolled runners and tacos are going from $800 to $1200.

I'm looking into doing this same swap. I recently picked up a clean 89 4runner for $500, and i found a guy here in my area who went down to $1500 for a 2002 pre runner motor.
What does everyone say to $1500 for this:
-3.4l 5vz-fe from an 02 pre runner with 80,000 miles
- dipstick already drilled
- exhaust crossover already mounted
- electrical with schematics
- factory S/C
Also, will I need a body lift or modded hood to fit a supercharged 3.4?

Thanks guys,
I'm staying with my $1500 offer to the guy, time will tell if he actually gets the price that he wants. He thinks it can be repaired, I do not.
Also, I posted on the 96-02 board about the throttle body on the '02. It has a partial drive by wire system on it. It still has a throttle cable from the pedal in the cab, but it has a motor on the TB that actually turns the throttle plate through part of the rotation. The throttle cable turns a sensor for about 1/2 of the full throttle plate rotation and the computer moves the motor. I have been told that this is for the traction control system so that the computer can back off the throttle/power. I have questions about how this would work for a swap, so, I may pass on this rig entirely because of that.
As for $500 for a salvaged Runner in CA, I could only hope...
Thanks,
Mike

3700 is way to much, as for the guy that is thinking paying 1500 for and engine. I got mine for 900 so he is likely asking the correct amount cause of the S/C. 1500 is a great price for a entire donor. If you see anything less then jump on that.
