speaking of backup lights, about a year ago i was going somewhere and i noticed that my combination meter was dead, my windows had stopped working, and i don't remember what else. i figured out the "gauge" fuse was blown and swapped it with a spare. next trip everything was fine until i put it in reverse, and then same thing. so i unplugged the backup light switch and no more trouble. tested the switch; that was fine. that was when i said to myself "you don't need backup lights. just figure it out later". well, i never even tried to trace that down, but ever since i got the new engine, i've been thinking "man, it would be cool if the problem with the backup lights was in all the wiring that just got swapped out". never thinking that would actually be the case. so when i tried starting the truck last week, i left that unplugged because i wanted to know that everything else was working properly. a couple of days ago i plugged it in, turned the key to on without starting the truck, and put it in reverse. then i jumped out and went around the back and my backup lights were working! no blown fuse! just a nice little bonus...

Screamer,
I had the same issues with the passeger side motor mount. I don't recall whether I mentioned the notch I had to make for the block coolant drain, but we had a bit of a discussusion regarding the griding that I had to do to fit the A/C bracket. Apparently this only a sometimes issue, depending on what year combinations are involved. It sounded to me as though earlier 3.4s had cast motor mounts, like our original 3.0s. The later 3.4s had pressed motor mounts, that were thinner material than the cast ones.

HOLY PASSING POWER! took the truck for it's first drive last night. i still don't have an exhaust past the small portion of downpipe that's on there, so i was turning heads everywhere i went! i almost wish i could leave it like that, but i imagine after a few days the attention would start to get on my nerves. every time i passed somebody, i stepped on it a little. and since i have no hood, my condenser fan relay cover is now MIA. lol.
i also drove it to work today since its only a couple of miles. i had to get gas on the way in, and since i was paying with cash, went into the store. when i came back out, there were these two guys pulling up to one of the pumps. when they stopped they both jumped out of their truck and went straight over to mine and just stared at the engine compartment. i walked up and they started asking me all of these questions like did i just swap it, how long did it take, etc. i had this huge grin the whole time i was pumping the gas, getting in the truck, driving away. well, okay, i've still got the grin

yeah, i can't wait until it's finshed and i can try going up the mountain. that's something i haven't done since i got the 4runner; i just didn't see the point in purposefully causing myself so much aggravation

Welcome to the club, Screamer!
I kinda figured that you'd like the difference!
As to the engine mount - I have had no issues with it, since it is such a beefy piece, anyway. I did make a point of making sure I had a decent radius on the notch, to be sure I didn't create a stress riser there.
Enjoy the new power, but remember with power comes responsibility!!!

Your first statement is kinda like I felt when I drove mine first. After I finished it up, less than two hours later I was making a 630 km (about 400 miles) trip back home. On an engine I had run for less than an hour by that point. I called my brother (who's house I used for my swap) and he thought I was calling to tell him it died. I drove it for 7 hours (got home at 4:30 a.m.) and slept for an hour and a half, then went to work. It has been a blast ever since.
And as for your second statement...there is a whole lotta satisfaction being able to say you swapped it yourself, isn't there? Like I've told a few people before, this swap will cost you more than just buying a newer 4Runner with the 3.4 already in it. But...there is the huge amount of pride you can take from a job like this that money simply cannot buy.
Welcome to the club. Enjoy.

Yeah I wouldn't mess with the motor mount bracket, just cut off that spout. The 3.0 didn't even have a spout on the drains, you'll never miss it.

You can sometimes find out if a part will fit or not by looking at carpart.com and see if there is crossover on their database.

I waited about 2 years for mine to die but I got tired of waiting and took out a good motor. It paid off though because I was able to sell my old motor for $1000 and the guy picked it up in my driveway.

I agree with Mt. Goat. While I can see waiting for the 3.0 to just die, having one that runs is worth much more. Offsets the cost of the 3.4 swap considerably.
Plus, one generally can't dictate when a 3.0 is going to die. Might give up the ghost at not such a convenient place, say 300 plus miles from home.
The 3.4 is an amazing upgrade... no need to wait.

x3. i agree completely with mt_goat and elvota. start looking for an engine if you really want to do it. i sold my 3.0 for $600. i probably could have gotten more, but i didn't want to sit on it. i managed to get rid of it two days after placing the ad, and i had to turn a lot of people away after it was gone. i still have a lot of accessories to sell and my total cost to date is about $700; hopefully i can bring that down a little more by selling what's left, but i think i've done pretty well. just make sure you've got a second form of transportation worked out if it's your only one. if you really want to do it, every mile you put on your 3.0 is money out of your pocket.

, but i probably would have still chose to grind the bracket. not that i'm expecting to have to drain the block anytime soon.
Nice to have the skinny pedal actually do something, don't ya think?
