93 pickup 4x4 - 3.4 swap
Hello folks!
I will be starting a 3.4 swap into my 93 4x4 sr5 (head gasket) as soon as I find a donor. Most likly I will be going with a Copart wreck.
Thanks in advance for all the great information
and I will document the build!
I consider myself decent mec but my knukle busting experience on yotas is limited. Swapped a corolla motor years ago but it was a simple drop and go!
From what I have read so far it looks like a T100 4x4 is the "best match" for my truck... Is that true?

Well the model kinda depends. Are you keeping your transmission? if you are is it a manual or a auto?
The 1997-1998 T100's are the best swaps in terms that they allow tuning if you tended to go s/c at a later date, AND if you want to retain the stock auto transmission the T100 ECU will talk to the transmission. They are exceedingly rare to find in a junkyard though.

Mine is a std trans and I planned on keeping it. Does it matter if I get one with a auto? It seems like there are many 4runners out there and I think everyone I've seen has an auto trans.

NO offense, but if you are asking that question you have a TON of reading to do or you risk getting on over your head at the worst, or just simply unprepared at the best.
1. Read all the stickies. Learn them, know them, live them.
2. Read this: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...splant-143516/

To answer your question though, IMO I would just grab a 4runner because they are more plentiful and then buy a manual ECM and repin your harness. You can use your current transmission without issue. All covered within the threads above.

Jason, thanks for the vote of confidence
but I get enough of that from the Mrs.
I'll do more reading and I would appreiciate you following me on my build since you guys are all I have for quality help...
My intent is not to get "something with a 3.4" but a unit that will save me time and $$... both things that are in short supply. I just don't want to buy, for example, an '98 Runner auto when maybe a '96 taco manual would present less headaches.
Also, I forgot to mention that all we have in PA for emmissions is a visual inspection for a cat (doesn't even need to have the guts in it)

Lots of guys in this forum willing to help and all friendly. Everyone starts somewhere seems to never get lost upon people in this forum unlike many many others.
Anyway, a 5sp Taco will help you spend less(about $100) on a manual ECM and the lack of having to repin the harness.
A runner is easier to come by, has no egr, you can resell the auto and convertor for about 4-500, and when you sell of the parts that you don't need, there is a larger market IMO.
Just depends on which way your looking to go. I'd go the runner route.....in fact I did.
